This April, the Doctor Strange of old ventures to the Nexus of Nightmares in a new comic book one-shot written by legendary Marvel editor Ralph Macchio and illustrated by Ibrahim Mostafa.

Marvel Comics has officially announced Doctor Strange: Nexus of Nightmares #1, the title of which is sure to bring to mind the upcoming Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is itself scheduled for release in May. "Expertly crafted" by the seasoned Macchio and the up-and-coming Mostafa, Nexus of Nightmares sees two of Doctor Strange's greatest adversaries join forces.

At the moment, Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme is "embarking on a transformative new era" in the comics, both in the Death of Doctor Strange limited series, which concludes with issue #5 on Jan. 26, and the upcoming relaunch series Strange, which releases its first issue on March 2. That being said, April's Nexus of Nightmares will instead "journey to the past" for a "never-before-told saga that presents Doctor Strange at his spellbinding best!"

Marvel's official press release reads, "Featuring his two most terrifying villains, Nightmare and Baron Mordo, and showcasing some of Doctor Strange's greatest feats yet, Doctor Strange: Nexus of Nightmares will provide a perfect entry point into the unique mystical world of Doctor Strange." The House of Ideas further explains that "this epic tale also promises to dazzle longtime fans of the iconic character with a fascinating venture into the dream realm that you won't want to wake up from!"

Nightmare has invaded Doctor Strange's dreams and turned them into terrible nightmares! These dark feelings now inhabit every fiber of Doctor Strange's waking life and has left him weak and unable to protect the realm. Now, Baron Mordo and Nightmare are ready to strike. Can Stephen shake Nightmare's grip over him? Or will the world be lost to Nightmare's dream realm forever!

Interestingly, Scott Derrickson, director of 2016's Doctor Strange, once expressed interest in including the villain Nightmare and the Dream Dimension in the upcoming sequel, eventually revealed to be titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, with Sam Raimi taking over as director of Multiverse of Madness and Derrickson shifting to an executive producer role, it remains to be seen if this particular aspect of Doctor Strange's history will be included in the sequel. That being said, one character who is definitely appearing in Multiverse of Madness is (Baron) Karl Mordo, with Chiwetel Ejiofor reprising his role from the first film.

Written by Ralph Macchio and illustrated by Ibrahim Mostafa, Doctor Strange: Nexus of Nightmares #1 goes on sale this April from Marvel Comics.
