Early Doctor Strange Concept Art Featured a Really, Really Different Dormammu

New concept art from Doctor Strange offers a very different version of the villainous Dormammu.

Marvel concept artist Jerad S. Marantz posted an early version of Dormammu from Doctor Strange that deviated quite dramatically from the comics — and the final version seen on-screen.

While the final version in the film blends Dormammu's comic book look with the cosmic energy of the Dark Dimension, this concept art offers something much closer to a classical god or titan. There's also a painterly quality that is a far cry from the look the movie settled on.

Though this take on the villain didn't make it to the screen, it's possible elements could be used for a future Doctor Strange foe. Nightmare has been all but confirmed to appear in Doctor Strange 2, and it's not hard to see how aspects of this design could fit into that character's look once it's updated for the MCU. Plus, with the movie titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a cosmic-zombie-fire-god would fit right in.

For now, little is known about the future of Doctor Strange, other than it will involve Scarlet Witch and will likely tie together with events in the WandaVision series on Disney+.

Directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen. The film hits theaters on May 7, 2021.
