In 2016, Marvel Studios released Doctor Strange, which introduced fans all over the world to Benedict Cumberbatch's Master of the Mystic Arts, a character who would go on to appear in Thor: Ragnarok before having a major role in Avengers: Infinity War. While the solo movie wasn't the biggest or the most lucrative of Marvel's impressive slate of films, it did earn more money than Ant-Man and quite a few others, films that would go on to generate sequels of their own.

For that reason, and given the popularity of the Sorcerer Supreme, most fans assumed that a sequel was all but guaranteed. However, Marvel never went on to make any announcements regarding Doctor Strange 2. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously said that no announcements had been made yet in order to keep the focus on the conclusion of Phase 3, before eventually mentioning in passing that a Doctor Strange sequel is something that would definitely happen.

Now, we have our biggest confirmation yet that Doctor Strange 2 is coming, courtesy of director Scott Derrickson. Derrickson, who directed and co-wrote the first Doctor Strange film, made a mysterious posting on his Instagram page, featuring a comic book image of the Sorcerer Supreme.

In the caption, the director wrote a very simple message that reads "“Not my will, but thine be done...” See you in September." The second part of the message is quite noteworthy. What's coming in September? Could the movie be officially announced then? Will it kick off production? It's difficult to say, but one thing that is very clear is that Derrickson is not playing around. After a surge of comments from fans arrived, the director later answered with his own comment: "I don't tease."

If anything, Derrickson seems to be making it quite clear that he is working on a Doctor Strange sequel. The quote in his caption is a Bible verse from Luke 22:42 and this, combined with an image of a praying Stephen Strange, is quite intriguing. Maybe the director is already hinting at a story.

Whatever the case may be, we'll find out, for certain, in September.
