WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Death of Doctor Strange #5, now on sale from Marvel Comics.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken some interesting deviations from the source material recently, setting up the mainstream adaptation of more unique figures to the onscreen universe. This includes moving some characters into legacy roles, such as setting up Sam Wilson as the new Captain America and having Kate Bishop take up the mantle of the Avengers' Hawkeye.

The Death of Doctor Strange #5 (by Jed MacKay, Lee Garbett, Antonio Fabela, and VC's Cory Petit) sees Clea step up to replace her estranged husband as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme. Given the precedent of a similar arc concerning Thor and Jane Foster set to be interpreted in the MCU, it is very possible that a similar fate awaits the onscreen version of Doctor Strange.

The Death of Doctor Strange series just came to an explosive conclusion, with the heroes of the Marvel Universe united around the magical hero. Briefly restored to life by his allies, the present-day Doctor Strange plays a crucial role in the defeat of the Three Mothers and the Peregrine Child. He works alongside his friends, gets advice from his younger self, and even makes peace with his estranged wife Clea, expressing his undying love for her. But this can't ultimately save him from an apparently inescapable fate. As the energies used to restore him dissipate, Strange gets enough time to kiss Clea and ask her to take up his mantle as Earth's protector before disappearing.

It's a tragic ending for Doctor Strange, albeit one that Marvel is already teasing won't necessarily be permanent. On top of the character being a major figure in the MCU (with a new film debuting later this year centering around him), solicitations for future issues imply that Clea will spend some of her time in the position trying to find a way to restore Doctor Strange to life. It's also likely that Clea's tenure as the Sorcerer Supreme won't be the only role she plays going forward. However, it's still a fun concept that could help the underutilized magic user reestablish her place in the greater Marvel Universe. It's also a surprisingly similar development to the arc that Thor and Jane Foster completed relatively recently.

Like Doctor Strange, the classic Thor was forced to vacate his heroic title (although he wasn't killed in the process). This allowed for his long-time love interest Jane Foster to step into the role, claiming Mjolnir for a time and assuming the mantle of the God of Thunder. Initially a controversial development, the story arc ended up becoming a defining one for both characters in the modern age. It's even being used as the inspiration for the upcoming MCU film, Thor: Love and Thunder. This may pave the way for the MCU version of Stephen Strange to go through a similar development, with his love Clea eventually taking on the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme in the cinematic universe.

As of now, Clea hasn't debuted in the films, although rumors have suggested that she may appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is the biggest knock against the MCU Doctor Strange going through a similar arc, as the MCU Jane Foster has already appeared in two previous films. Since her backstory and connection to Thor are already established, Jane's upgrade would be less jarring than a newly introduced Clea taking the role from Strange. Even if there is a chance of the character taking over the role, this is not likely to happen in the near future.

However, this does suggest that Marvel at least considers such a transition to be a good direction for both characters, given that this new development is likely to define the magic corner of the Marvel Universe for the foreseeable future. If Clea is brought into the MCU and does manage to leave a good impression, there's no reason to think she wouldn't eventually be capable of following the model created by Jane Foster.
