Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Xochitl Gomez recently weighed in on whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of America Chavez could be a mutant.

Gomez addressed speculation that Chavez's dimension-hopping powers could be mutant in origin in an interview with journalist Josh Wilding. "Yeah, I mean I'm honestly open to anything," she said. "As long as we get to see... I think there's so much more to her and her story that we haven't really seen yet. I think there are lots of layers to America, and I think there are some fun things to explore. Hopefully, we get to explore the things, and yeah, I think that's all I'm gonna say [Laughs]."

Mutants were added to MCU canon in the sixth and final episode of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, "No Normal." Here, protagonist Kamala Khan discovers that her superhuman abilities are the result of her genetic make-up and not her mystical bracelet as previously believed. The scene in which Kamala learns the truth about her powers also features a short sample of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series theme tune, driving home the connection between her and Marvel's most famous mutant characters.

Xochitl Gomez Dives Into The MCU's Deep End

While Gomez remains coy about whether America Chavez is or isn't a mutant, the actor has been more open about what it was like to join the MCU on a high-profile project like the Doctor Strange sequel. Gomez recently recalled how she reviewed behind-the-scenes footage from previous Marvel Studios movies to get a sense of the scale of the production she'd signed up for. "I watched lots of that prior to working on the set because it's like, how many people are actually on the set? How many people are actually there? What does it look like? Besides the fact that we're having fun, I did just as much preparation as I could also just to be mentally okay," she said.

Gomez also had to contend with another staple of the MCU: reshoots. The star confirmed that the opening of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness she initially filmed was very different, with Benedict Cumberbatch's Defender Strange dying to protect America Chavez and not betraying her. Gomez noted that this had a knock-on effect on her character's arc, as in the original version of the story, America is "heartbroken over the fact that someone who cared and was protecting [her] had passed away."
