Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see a more powerful portrayal of Marvel's favorite sorcerer, according to writer Michael Waldron.

As reported by Comicbook.com, Waldron said of the sequel, "I think that Stephen Strange has been through so much between that first movie and now. That first movie was an incredible origin story of how he became a sorcerer, but now he's been through that. He's fought Thanos [in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame] and he's on the other end of it, and he's kind of at the height of his powers. So it's an interesting place to catch up with him."

Waldron added that working with Multiverse of Madness's director Sam Raimi "was a blast...That was the experience of a lifetime. We had a great time writing and developing that movie last year and then shooting it over in London at the end of last year and the top of this year. It was great. Sam's an incredible director [and] the cast is unreal on that movie. So it's a hell of a ride." Raimi, best known for bringing Spider-Man to the big screen, was announced to take over as director of Multiverse of Madness after the first film's director, Scott Derrickson, left the project due to creative differences with Marvel Studios.

The film will also connect directly with Waldron's previous project, the Disney+ series Loki. When asked about working on the two projects in conjunction with each other, he answered "It was good, except for all the times in writing Loki that we were like, 'Well, that'll be Doctor Strange 2's problem.' And then suddenly it's your problem. (laughs) No, it's great to just continue to expand the MCU and to just get to lay another brick in that amazing, ongoing story. It's a privilege."

In a previous interview, Waldron stated, "It was really fun to go from from Loki straight into Doctor Strange. It was a totally different thing, you know, making a show about a villain to making a movie about a hero. It was good, and felt like I got to work completely different muscles." He added that his background in comedy writing, working with Dan Harmon on shows like Rick & Morty and Good Game, was useful when putting together the script. "Comedy helps, because if nothing else, it's just... the pace. I think the pacing of comedy is similar, in a way, to the pacing of thrillers, of thrilling movies," Waldron explained. "Sam likes to work at an accelerated pace and everything, and that was something I was very comfortable with from Rick and Morty, from Loki. So our sensibilities clicked very well."

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is due to hit theaters on March 25, 2022.
