Doctor Strange's assistant and fellow sorcerer Wong is getting a colorful makeover in the form of a new costume.

A promotional image shared on Twitter by user @DrStrangeUpdate for the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows actor Benedict Wong readying to cast a magic spell, adorned in a new, multi-colored tunic that's noticeably more vivid than ones seen in the character's previous appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The new outfit bears varying shades of violet with touches of gold fabric. The cummerbund exhibits some reddish highlights wrapped with a copper-esque fabric belt.

In December, Hasbro unveiled the new costume's look in promotional photos for the character's upcoming action figure, evocative of a traditional Samurai outfit, replete with sword for possible physical battle. In the MCU films to date, Wong has armed himself only with his knowledge of the mystic arts. The teaser trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also shows glimpses of his new costume.

By comparison, the garment worn by Wong in Spider-Man: No Way Home is comprised of a darker maroon hue. The costume isn't unlike that seen in the underground fight scene in the recent Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and his first appearance in 2016's Doctor Strange.

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1963, the character debuted along with Doctor Strange himself in Strange Tales #110. Wong's comic book incarnation has also historically exhibited a more toned-down wardrobe, typically adopting traditional Chinese garb, usually green with yellow highlights.

As opposed to Wong's new flashier duds, Doctor Strange himself appears to be toning down the colors of his own costume -- or at least, one of his multiversal counterparts does. In the movie's trailer, Strange is confronted by a darker, evil version of himself as the multiverse itself goes awry. The mayhem appears to ensue as a result of Strange's spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home -- a spell that tore a hole in the barrier between universes, and apparently caused more damage than initially thought.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script by Jade Halley Bartlett and Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.
