The following contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, now playing in theaters.

Marvel fans are convinced Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is teasing an adaptation of the Secret Wars limited comic series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Secret Wars was a nine-issue comic book storyline released between May 2015 and January 2016 that was inspired by the 1984-85 miniseries of the same name. Jonathan Hickman wrote the crossover event, which depicted the incursion and destruction of the Marvel 616 Universe and the Ultimate Marvel Universe. The two universe's respective Earths, along with pieces of other alternate Earths, were combined into Battleworld, which included multiple variants of several Marvel heroes and villains. The series concluded with the Marvel 616 Universe being restored and its occupants now residing on Earth-Prime. The crossover was notable for officially bringing Miles Morales/Spider-Man over from the Ultimate Universe and into the Marvel 616 Universe. After the Doctor Strange sequel mentioned 'incursions,' a term used to denote when two parallel Earths are colliding, fans quickly flooded Twitter with theories and guesses regarding how Secret Wars could be the next huge Infinity War/Endgame crossover film event from Marvel Studios.

Most fans seem excited that Marvel is not waiting to build towards its next saga-ending event. The Multiverse has been heavily featured throughout Phase Four with appearances so far in Loki, What If...?, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Marvel Studios has shown fans it is willing and ready to embrace the Multiverse with the inclusion of the original Spider-Man actors in No Way Home, Kang the Conqueror's introduction in Loki, and casting popular fan-pick John Krasinski as a Mister Fantastic variant.

By comparison, the MCU's "Infinity Saga" covered three phases of films but didn't officially kick off until the final Phase One film Marvel's The Avengers (2012), which introduced audiences to Thanos the Mad Titan in a mid-credits scene. The Infinity Stones began to play a larger role in the MCU beginning with Phase Two's Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), which featured the Reality Stone and Power Stone, respectively. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) later retconned the Tesseract and Loki's Scepter from The Avengers as the Space Stone and Mind Stone, respectively.

It is unknown when a Secret Wars movie might be officially announced, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has revealed that the company has already planned the next decade of the MCU. "In the next 10 years, with existing characters and new characters and new storytelling tools with the multiverse, anything can happen," Feige said during Disney's CinemaCon 2022 presentation. The studio currently has 11 films and 17 TV series in various stages of development.
