Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has tied with 2011's Thor for the second-worst CinemaScore rating in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following its theatrical debut, Multiverse of Madness earned a CinemaScore of B+, a score it shares with the first Thor movie starring Chris Hemsworth. However, both films are only the second-worst rated movies in the MCU, with the worst-rated being Eternals with a B.

While this rating may be less than stellar for an MCU film, Multiverse of Madness holds an audience score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and a critics score of 76% at the time of writing. According to aggregated reviews, some moviegoers have described certain elements of the Doctor Strange sequel as "cheesy" and underdeveloped. However, audiences seem to agree that Sam Raimi's distinct directorial style has resulted a film unlike any other installment in the MCU.

Multiverse of Madness opened in 4,545 theaters across the United States on May 6, the widest spread since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began. After earning $36 million in its Thursday night previews and grossing over $90 million on its first day in theaters, current projections put Multiverse of Madness on track toward the biggest domestic box office opening of 2022. Initially, it was predicted that the film would rake in between $160 million and $180 million at the domestic box office during its first weekend in theaters. However, Multiverse of Madness is now expected to earn over $200 million, which would make it the highest-grossing film of the year so far.

While its Thursday numbers are significantly lower than Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned $50 million in the same timeframe, industry analysts also project that Multiverse of Madness could make its way into the top 5 opening weekends of all time as well.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and ties directly into two of Marvel's Disney+ series, WandaVision and Loki, both of which dealt heavily with the multiverse. However, while the Doctor Strange sequel will delve further into the multiverse, writer Michael Waldron explained that the multiverse will not be used as a plot device or a "MacGuffin," and instead will act as the film's emotional core.

Following the box office success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was reported that Multiverse of Madness would have "more fun with the multiverse." This included even more cameos and character introductions than originally intended, such as Patrick Stewart's return as Professor X, an appearance from Captain Carter, who was introduced in Marvel's What If...? series, and the live-action debut of America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez.
