Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness screenwriter Michael Waldron has revealed that it was director Sam Raimi who came up with Black Bolt's mind-blowing death in the 2022 Marvel film.

"I was at a point in the script where I was like, 'Shit, I don’t know what to do,'" Waldron told Empire. "We wanted the first death to feel really horrific: 'Listen, don’t fuck with Wanda.' We were sitting on Zoom discussing how we kill Black Bolt, and somebody said his power is shooting ultra-powerful energy from his mouth. And I swear to God, without missing a beat, Sam goes, 'What mouth?' And Sam just painted the scene for us, '… and then you just cut to him, Wanda’s just ripped his mouth closed, and he screams, and his head explodes.' That’s master of horror Sam Raimi for you."

Anson Mount reprised his role as Black Bolt from the short-lived 2017 ABC series Inhumans in Multiverse of Madness. Mount made an extended cameo as the Earth-838 variant of Black Bolt, a member of the Illuminati, who was killed by the Scarlet Witch during her murderous rampage through the Baxter Foundation building. The character's unsettling death was heavily meme'd online by Marvel Cinematic Universe fans who were shocked at how Marvel Studios treated the character and the larger Inhumans franchise as a whole in the film. While some fans were upset at how the film handled Black Bolt, Mount has said that he was "Beyond grateful for the experience" and that he treasured getting to work with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and horror legend Sam Raimi on the film.

What's Next for Black Bolt in the MCU?

Black Bolt and the Inhumans were noticeably absent from Marvel's Multiverse Saga announcement at 2022's San Diego Comic-Con, suggesting that Feige has no immediate plans on fully reintroducing and incorporating the Inhumans into the MCU at this time. Mount has confirmed that he is open to the idea of returning as the ruler of Attilan in future Marvel projects. Fans also remain hopeful that the Inhumans will have a place in the MCU, recently using the hashtag #RestoreTheInhumanVerse to call on Marvel Studios to reintroduce the Royal Family of Attilan into the MCU as soon as possible.

Another character fans are interested in seeing return to the MCU is Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, who seemingly perished in the final act of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Waldron is also keen on seeing the Scarlet Witch terrorize the MCU again, suggesting in a recent interview that the character has only temporarily removed "herself from the board." While the former Avenger's death was never explicitly shown on screen, Marvel Studios has not announced any future projects featuring Elizabeth Olsen in the role at this time.
