Earlier this week, director Scott Derrickson abruptly departed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, months before the Marvel Studios sequel was set to begin principal photography.

While Marvel Studios is the midst of searching for a replacement director for the project, the production is still scheduled to begin principal photography this May, with no announced pushback on the film's May 2021 release date.

In a statement announcing Derrickson's departure, the studio mentioned it had "amicably parted ways" with the filmmaker, with both the studio and Derrickson citing "creative differences" as the reason for the split. Despite this, both parties have publicly expressed gratitude for their past collaboration on 2016's Doctor Strange. Derrickson will remain attached to the sequel as an executive producer.

Officially announced at Comic-Con International in San Diego this past July, the sequel will reportedly involve Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, along with the introduction of a mystery character that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has wanted to incorporate into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time.
