Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Baron Karl Mordo first appeared in 1963's Strange Tales #111 and is one of Doctor Strange's longest-standing villains. He first appeared in the MCU in 2016's Doctor Strange. While initially an ally to Doctor Strange, Mordo breaks from the hero at the end of the film and strikes on his own, looking to curb abuses of magic and take out his fellow sorcerers.

Doctor Strange performed well upon release and earned $677.7 million against a budget of between $165 and $236.6 million. The movie was also well-received by critics, earning an 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. Marvel Studios later greenlit a sequel, with Doctor Strange director slated to return. However, Derrickson departed the project due to creative differences, and original Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi stepped in to replace him. Later, production on the sequel, which is part of MCU Phase Four, was delayed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time of writing, specific plot details about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are scarce. However, the movie takes place after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Loki and WandaVision, all three of which released in 2021. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' plot synopsis teases the titular hero continuing his investigation into the Time Stone when a former ally -- presumably Mordo -- interferes, causing a great evil to be released.

Directed by Raimi from a script by Jade Halley Bartlett and Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is slated to release on May 6. In addition to those mentioned above, the film stars Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.
