Two years after its announcement, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has finally gotten its first trailer, teasing everything Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been leading up to thus far.

The trailer showcases action and mysticism on a far grander scale than anything audiences might have seen before, even if they've just come from the recently released Spider-Man: No Way Home. The clip sees the return of a few familiar faces, such as Scarlet Witch and Mordo. Alongside them is America Chavez, the newest superhero in the MCU. They will have to work together to put a stop to one of the most lethal and perhaps the Strange-est supervillain the Master of the Mystic Arts may have ever faced.

The trailer was originally released as one of the post-credits scene for No Way Home, which the Sorcerer Supreme starred in as Spidey's friend-turned-temporary-foe. Prior to its premiere on the big screen, film pundits teased that the Doctor Strange sequel trailer would arrive before 2022 and that it would be tied to the Spider-Man film.

It was originally reported that Disney+'s WandaVision would lead into the upcoming film. However, any references to Strange were ultimately cut in order for a tighter focus on Wanda and her transformation into the Scarlet Witch. The final episode was then retroactively edited in order to include a subtle connection between the series and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The trailer also gives audiences some idea of what star Benedict Cumberbatch was referring to when it stated in a previous interview, "There's a lot of stuff going on in it... No, there's great stuff for me to do. It's very busy. It's called The Multiverse of Madness, and it's bonkers." Aside from the involvement of the Sorcerer Supreme and Scarlet Witch, audiences will several more familiar faces, such as the return of both Clint Barton and Kate Bishop from Disney+'s Hawkeye. Reports of their involvement began with a call sheet, hinting at a "Novice Archer" and "Archer" set to appear in Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel Studios president and chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment Kevin Feige previously discussed the connection between Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, explaining, "It's absolutely surreal to be working on a Doctor Strange movie with Sam Raimi in one part of the office, and then working on a Spider-Man movie with Jon Watts and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock in another room... That has been a mind-blowing part of the last 10 years of my life."
