The following contains major spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in theaters now.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness screenwriter Michael Waldron refused to speculate on the Marvel Cinematic Universe future of John Krasinski's Mister Fantastic.

Waldron was asked whether Krasinski would reprise the role in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie during an interview with Variety. "It's a question for somebody else," deflected Waldron. The version of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic Krasinski portrays in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hails from the Earth-838 alternate reality. Due to his multiversal origins, some fans believe that there's no guarantee that Marvel Studios will invite the actor back when the leader of the Fantastic Four makes his debut in the MCU's core, Earth-616 reality.

Krasinski's turn as Reed Richards isn't the only surprise cameo in the Doctor Strange sequel. Fans were also shocked by the return of Anson Mount as a variant of Black Bolt from the 2017 TV series Marvel's Inhumans. This take on the character is more in-line with what comics fans are used to, right down to his comics-inspired, masked costume.

Less shocking is the inclusion of Patrick Stewart's Professor X, whose role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was telegraphed by the film's trailers. Like Richards and Black Bolt, Charles Xavier is part of the group known as The Illuminati that is ultimately terminated during a confrontation with Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Despite Professor X's death in Doctor Strange 2, Stewart won't rule out starring in future X-Men-related MCU projects. "You know, the whole X-Men comic series is so huge, so vast, there might be an opportunity in which he comes back," Stewart said. "We'll see."

As with Xavier, the remaining members of The Illuminati were also heavily hinted at ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' release. Trailers and TV spots made it clear that alternate versions of Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) would show up in the film, while many fans correctly deduced the presence of Lashana Lynch's Maria Rambeau as the Captain Marvel of Earth-838.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still managed to sneak in at least one other surprise cameo, however. During the movie's first post-credits scene, the Master of the Mystic Arts encounters a formidable extra-dimensional sorceress played by Charlize Theron. Theron has since confirmed this character is Clea, an ally and love interest of Strange's from the original comics.
