The following contains major spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, now in theaters.

Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness found Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange in deep trouble as he road-tripped across the cosmos following incursions at home. It turns out that the movie's villain was Wanda Maximoff, who officially broke bad and became the grief-driven Scarlet Witch on Earth-616 (aka the mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe Earth). She wanted to harness America Chavez's power of opening portals across the multiverse, so she could find a world to be with her sons. Her ambitions created a blood-soaked rivalry, with a desperate Strange once more pulling a Hail Mary play in a tragic, mind-bending ending filled with consequences.

Wanda wanted to grab a fleeing America on Earth-838, knowing the girl and Strange went there to find help. Wanda Dream Walked and possessed Wanda-838 to rampage through the Baxter Foundation. Wanda took out the Illuminati before chasing Strange, Christine-838 and America to a mystical pocket where the Book of Ashanti was.

However, before the heroes could use its power and light, Wanda-838 burned the book, kidnapped America and tossed Strange and Christine through a portal. Wanda-838 sent America to Scarlet Witch before going back to her boys. Scarlet Witch then began using the Darkhold's spells at Mount Wundagore to start the extraction process, knowing she was close to finding her dream life again.

Strange and Christine were marooned in a world where realities collided, decimating it due to incursions there. Strange visited the Sanctum Sanctorum to see if there was a version of himself who could help, but this one actually used the Darkhold, akin to Wanda. Evil Strange wanted to find a world where he'd be with Christine, but it led to his Earth breaking. Seeing Christine-838, though, inspired this fiend to fight Strange-616 for control of the scientist.

Luckily, Strange was able to defeat him, realizing the Darkhold here offered one last shot at fighting Wanda. He couldn't teleport back home, but he could Dream Walk too. Strange didn't have a living vessel (aka another Strange) back home to possess, but he took the body of the dead Defender Strange variant that America brought over. This Zombie Strange was then able to harness the souls of the dead and get to Mount Wundagore to fight Wanda.

Wanda Realized She Was The Monster In Doctor Strange 2

Zombie Strange eventually got help from Wong to beat the golems down, but Wanda was still too powerful. Zombie Strange was able to find America on the ritual table, though. Sadly, she gave her blessing for him to kill her, as Defender Strange initially planned in the opening act. However, the Avenger made it clear he believed in her, and she could take Wanda on, once she trusted herself.

A motivated America channeled her multiversal energy and slugged it out with the witch before physically taking Wanda-616 to Earth-838. There, Billy and Tommy recoiled, crying at the sight of the Scarlet Witch after seeing her chaos damage their mom. Wanda finally accepted she was a monster, with her 838-counterpart admitting the boys were in good hands once a Wanda was around, no matter where in the universe. As a result, Scarlet Witch went back with America and brought the mountain down, killing herself out of remorse.

America later brought Strange home, leaving Christine-838. While they acknowledged they loved each other no matter the Earth, being together just wasn't in the cards. America began training as Kamar-Taj rebuilt with new mages. Shockingly, when Strange recovered and left his Sanctum feeling as chipper as ever, a third eye opened, leaving him yelling in pain in the streets.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended there, confirming Strange was corrupted from using the Darkhold. It's unsure what or who could have possessed him, but seeing as Evil Strange had a third eye, too, and selfishly tried to find a Christine, this could make Strange-616 a villain down the line. The Darkhold also poisoned Wanda, burying her humanity inside a mental project of Sokovian rubble, so the heroic Strange may now be a prisoner. It left fans wondering if a sinister Strange could later roam and cause trouble in the MCU.
