Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness artwork shows off the sorcerer's new comic-accurate suit.

Previously revealed by a new Marvel Legends figure from Hasbro, Doctor Strange will be getting his Defender attire from Marvel Comics in the upcoming film. The outfit first appeared in Defenders #1 from 2011 and was featured on artists Terry and Rachel Dodson's cover for the issue alongside fellow Defenders She-Hulk (Betty Ross), Iron Fist, Silver Surfer and Namor. The new artwork adjoins the action figure, giving fans their best look yet of how Defender Strange will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

Strange's Defenders look is not the only comic-accurate suit getting adapted for live-action. A promotional image featuring Strange shows off more of his altered robes from the first film and other appearances in the MCU like Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: No Way Home. This suit has the Eye of Agamotto hung higher up near Strange's neck, as it typically appears in the comic source material.

The inclusion of the new suit marks another instance in which the work of comic writer Matt Fraction -- who wrote this Defenders series -- has influenced the MCU, being that his run on Hawkeye and the art of David Aja served as the inspiration behind much of Marvel's Hawkeye series on Disney+. The streaming series ran between November and December of 2021 and featured the return of a major villain from Marvel's Netflix shows, Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin. Despite the inclusion of this Doctor Strange suit, the only live-action adaptation of a Defenders team has been seen on Netflix in the limited series, The Defenders.

The multiversal door is open for more heroes to return in the film however, with many from other past movies and series already rumored to be onboard. Following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox, these rumored characters include Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Ioan Gruffudd's Mr. Fantastic, with the two actors reprising their roles from the X-Men film series and Fantastic Four duology, respectively. Heroes confirmed for the upcoming sequel though include Wanda Maximoff aka the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Wong (Benedict Wong) and the MCU debut of America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez).

The first Multiverse of Madness teaser appeared after the credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home -- which featured Strange's most recent MCU appearance -- before being officially released online. In addition to a new suit, the teaser gave a look at a Doctor Strange variant, who appears to be none other than Strange Supreme from the animated What If...? series on Disney+. Any official artwork or promotional material confirming who this Doctor Strange officially is remains to be seen.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters on May 6, 2022.
