The following contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, now playing in theaters.

One of the things Sam Raimi promised as the new director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was to bring horror and gore to the property. It made sense given his past with the Evil Dead franchise and other horror films like Drag Me to Hell, but many wondered if he could really pull it off with such a family-friendly Disney brand. Well, make no mistake, Raimi's creative team didn't hold back at all, incorporating many shocking kills. With that in mind, let's dissect and rank the most brutal ones that occurred as Strange and America Chavez tried to stop a new magical threat.

9. Defender Strange Got Mercilessly Impaled

In the opening act, Defender Strange tried to grab the Book of the Vishanti to stop a demon hunting him and America in a pocket dimension. Unfortunately, its dark magic was way too powerful, so Strange tried to drain her to ensure the being couldn't extract her multiverse-hopping powers.

This distraction allowed the beast to impale him multiple times with its tentacles in a fatality fit for Mortal Kombat. This left America petrified, but it allowed her to open a portal and escape with the corpse. Still, it reminded the teen how creatures out there would stop at nothing to harness her abilities.

8. Doctor Strange 2's Captain Marvel Got Smashed

America eventually went to Earth-838 with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's main Strange from Earth-616. However, they were imprisoned by the Illuminati, who went to war with the real villain: Wanda. Scarlet Witch possessed a Wanda there, and when she raided the council's chambers, she battled the Illuminati members who were trying to put Strange and America on trial.

While fighting this Captain Marvel, a Maria Rambeau variant, things got explosive. Maria used her cosmic burn, but Wanda's magical blasts were powerful enough to blow her enemy away. Wanda then used her telekinesis to drop a giant statue on Maria, squashing her in a blow that proved to America and Christine-838 that the witch had no mercy left.

7. Reed Richards Got Strung Apart in Doctor Strange 2

John Krasinski debuted as Reed Richards-838, trying to talk Wanda out of her mission. He admitted he knew how she felt because he had kids, too, and could understand her wanting America's world-hopping power to find a world where she could parent Billy and Tommy. Wanda asked if he had a wife, though, and then said it was great because his kids would still have a parent when she was done with him.

Scarlet Witch levitated Reed and unstrung his body, ripping his essence into nothingness in another sadistic act. Hearing Mister Fantastic screaming in pain wasn't what fans envisioned in his official MCU debut, but again, it was a monstrous statement of intent from a mom who'd do anything to get her kids back.

6. Doctor Strange 2's Captain Carter Got Sliced

Peggy/Captain Carter was also on the Illuminati, using her rocket pack and Union Jack shield to battle Wanda. However, Scarlet Witch proved to be a brilliant tactician, too, which may well be ascribed to Steve Rogers' tactics during her time with the 616-Avengers in the MCU.

The fracas ended with Wanda grabbing the shield with her telekinesis after catching Peggy off-guard and throwing it straight through her at a lightning-fast speed. Thankfully, the cameras didn't show her body split in two, but the sight of Captain Carter bleeding out her mouth with despair in her eyes said it all. Wanda was swift, cruel and totally unforgiving, which led to this Sentient of Liberty paying the ultimate price.

5. Dark Strange Was Horrifically Impaled in Doctor Strange 2

When Stephen and Christine were flung out of the 838, they arrived in a world decimated due to its Dark Strange using the Darkhold to find a world where he could be with a Christine. He then fought Strange to get control of Christine-838, with both men using musical notes in a weird magical brawl to stop each other.

It resulted in a massive crescendo, pelting Dark Strange out the window. He landed on the gate outside, impaled by a giant stake to leave Christine stunned and mortified over how deadly their journey had become. Strange wasn't taking prisoners anymore, though. Casualties didn't matter because Wanda had America, so Stephen had to get more aggressive.

4. Professor X Was Broken Beyond Repair in Doctor Strange 2

Professor Xavier Patrick Stewart

The last Illuminati member to fall was Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier, their leader. He tried to get into Wanda's mindscape when she raided the chambers, entering a white void. He found the good Wanda, hiding under Sokovian rubble, which the Darkhold trapped her in, so the evil Scarlet Witch could take control for months after WandaVision.

Sadly, red smoke engulfed the room, and Wanda grabbed his neck. She then snapped it there and in the real world, creating one of the most gruesome sequences in a Marvel movie. Seeing Xavier's body huddled over was more impactful than when Superman snapped Zod's neck in Man of Steel, which again, felt cruel because this wasn't how fans wanted the X-Men to debut.

3. Illuminati Strange Was Melted Away

The Illuminati had a secret of their own: their Strange used dark magic to kill Thanos. However, he was corrupted, losing himself along the way, so the group decided to kill him after he broke the rules and endangered them. He agreed, tearfully on his knees, allowing Black Bolt to step up.

The Inhuman leader apologized, then melted him away with his sonic blast in another terrifying scene. It proved how harsh the Illuminati could be, nodding to how they took extreme measures in the comics. Seeing a lost soul of a hero being executed reiterated how other Earths handled things in pretty iron-fisted manners.

2. Wanda's Doctor Strange 2 Sacrifice Was Heartbreaking

Eventually, America opened a portal to show Wanda how her kids in the 838 were scared of the witch. This held a mirror up, reflecting that she was indeed a monster. It drove the selfish Wanda back to Wundagore, where she collapsed the Darkhold temple on herself, finally tired of all the chaos, death and destruction her project wrought.

Still, it was heartbreaking because all Wanda wanted was happiness. She was weaponized by Hydra, mistreated by the Avengers and then lost Vision to Thanos, so it was a tragic journey filled with trauma and depression. However, Wanda knew she had to go because she couldn't trust herself to make the right choices moving forward.

1. Black Bolt Got His Brain Blown Out in Doctor Strange 2

Black Bolt in Inhumans

It was pretty great seeing Anson Mount reprising his role from the Inhumans TV show, finally rocking his iconic headpiece. However, Wanda quickly snuffed out his ego when the Illuminati boasted he'd kill her with just one word. She joked about how he would speak, with the film cutting to Wanda putting a hex on him and sewing his mouth shut.

As Blackagar Boltagon struggled and screamed on the inside, his cosmic energy blew his own brains out. This was Wanda's coldest kill, made worse by how she toyed with the Attilan king and savored his fear before lapping up how desperate the Illuminati got. Wanda thrived off their panic, cementing this Scarlet Witch was a murderer who couldn't be reasoned with.

To see all these brutal deaths, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now in theaters.
