Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will welcome back an antihero from the first film.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who portrays Baron Mordo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, confirmed to Screen Rant that he will return for Sam Raimi's sequel to the 2016 film. "We're hoping to start pretty soon is what I can tell you," he told our sister site regarding production starting up. "So, you know, as soon as possible. We're all really excited to get going and to get cracking with it. I can't wait."

Mordo served as Doctor Strange's friend and mentor in Scott Derrickson's first film, helping Strange and Wong defeat Kaecilius and Dormammu. However, he became disillusioned with the sorcerers after Strange and the Ancient One used their powers to bend nature to their will. He was last seen in the post-credits scene stealing the mystical energy from a fellow sorcerer, teasing his villainous turn.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has had a troubled production ever since it was announced.  Derrickson departed the project in January, with Raimi confirming that he would take over directorial duties in April. Its release date was changed from Nov. 5, 2021 to March 25, 2022 to make room for Sony and Marvel's untitled third Spider-Man movie.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Elizabeth Olsen. The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on March 25, 2022.
