For comparison, the films above it include Avengers: Endgame ($858.3 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804.7 million), Black Panther ($700.4 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($678.8 million), The Avengers ($623.3 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459 million), Captain Marvel ($426.8 million) and Iron Man 3 ($409 million).

Despite being kept from two major territories -- China and Russia -- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw immense success upon release. After just four days in theaters, the film broke the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office and quickly became the second-largest worldwide release for a film in post-pandemic, following Spider-Man: No Way Home.

However, there was at least one point after its release when it appeared the film's success may be limited. Following its substantial opening gross, the Doctor Strange film saw a massive drop at the box office. For comparison, the film earned $90 million on its opening day and over the Friday of its second weekend earned just $16.7 million, for a 81% drop. While it went on to perform fairly well at the box office, it is speculated the film will not be able to reach the $1 billion mark worldwide.
