The Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell has continued to tease an apparent role in director Sam Raimi's upcoming Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

During a video interview with The Illuminerdi, Campbell was asked about Spider-Man: No Way Home, and if there were any stars from Spidey's cinematic past he was excited to see make a comeback. "Well, you might wanna check out the Doctor Strange movie, though," Campbell said. "That's the one that's worth talking about... If I were able to talk about it. What's cool is when they sue me, I'm gonna sue you because you brought it up. So, I appreciate that."

A longtime friend and collaborator of Raimi's, Campbell starred as main protagonist Ash Williams in all three of the director's original Evil Dead films: 1981's The Evil Dead, 1987's Evil Dead II and 1992's Army of Darkness. Campbell also made a cameo as Ash in director Fede Álvarez's 2013 reboot film Evil Dead before once again reprising the role for the Starz television series Ash vs Evil Dead in 2015. Raimi and Campbell are co-producing the franchise's next feature film, Evil Dead Rise, which is due to premiere on HBO Max next year.

Of course, Campbell also made cameos in all three of Sony's Raimi-directed Spider-Man movies. In 2002's Spider-Man, the Evil Dead alum portrayed the ring announcer for Spidey's wrestling match against Bonesaw McGraw. Campbell subsequently returned to play an usher in 2004's Spider-Man 2 and a waiter in 2007's Spider-Man 3.

For years, rumors persisted that Campbell was once slated to play Mysterio in Raimi's canceled Spider-Man 4, though the actor himself later debunked this. "That was a fanboy thing that started," Campbell said back in 2019. "Do you know Sam Raimi never sent, like, an email or a phone call saying, 'Hey Bruce, uh, prepping Spider-Man 4, what do you think about Mysterio?' That conversation never happened." (The character of Mysterio was eventually played by Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: Far From Home.)

However, Campbell has certainly teased playing a role in Raimi's next Marvel movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Back in April of 2020, shortly after it was confirmed that Raimi would be helming the Doctor Strange sequel, Campbell volunteered to star in the film in an antagonistic role.

Then, in February of this year, Campbell shared a photo of the city of London while Multiverse of Madness was filming there. "Boy, it was a blast, working in a certain city, with a certain director on a certain movie with a certain actor - it sure was!" Campbell wrote. Finally, on April Fool's Day, Campbell shared a "leaked script" from Multiverse of Madness, featuring a supposed Doctor Strange/Evil Dead crossover.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theaters on May 6, 2022.
