Bruce Campbell explained why the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has had to reshoot so many scenes and toss out ones that were already shot.

Campbell, a frequent Sam Raimi collaborator, sat down for an interview with Game Informer to talk about the soon-to-be-released Evil Dead video game, and the conversation turned towards the Doctor Strange sequel. Campbell pre-emptively brushed off a question about whether he would make a cameo in the film, though he did discuss the process of making it. "The Marvel guys, they make eight of these movies at the same time, so they’re always updating storylines," he explained. "So, my buddy Sam [Raimi] has had to add scenes that [Marvel] told him he had to shoot, and he’s removed scenes that no longer apply. So until May rolls around I don’t think Benedict Cumberbatch even knows if he’s in this movie or not."

This isn’t the only Marvel Cinematic Universe picture reportedly going back for late reshoots. Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi recently noted that, with almost exactly four months to go until the premiere date, the filming was still not done yet. "It comes out in July, so probably the end of June," Waititi joked. "Probably like a day before the premiere [laughs]. That’s how we do it." Later reports revealed that the reshoots were specifically for Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher.

Raimi had previously sworn off helming any superhero projects in the future after the backlash from 2007’s Spider-Man 3. The Evil Dead mastermind said he went back on his word because it seemed like a good challenge. "My agent called me and said, 'They’re looking for a director at Marvel for this movie and your name came up. Would you be interested?'" Raimi said. "And I thought, 'I wonder if I could still do it.' They’re really demanding, those types of pictures. And I felt, 'Well, that’s reason enough.'"

Raimi also recently discussed how he never thought Marvel would adapt the Sorcerer Supreme to the big screen. “[Doctor Strange] was like a second or third-tier character for Marvel," Raimi recalled. "Obviously, their big popular names were Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Captain America, Thor. And because none of those other movies were being made, I actually never imagined they would make a Doctor Strange movie. Just seemed far from possible." Not only is Strange coming back for a second solo film but he'll be joined by Scarlet Witch, Gargantos, the Illuminati, America Chavez and more.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens in theaters on May 6.
