A new synopsis for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness highlights Stephen Strange's importance in a post-Avengers: Endgame world.

Marvel Japan posted the synopsis for the film, which arrives in May 2022 and follows up on the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the latter film, Stephen performs a risky spell that rips open the multiverse, and the consequences will see him team up with Wong, Scarlet Witch, and America Chavez. But they'll also pit him against a deadly foe: himself.

The door of the multiverse, full of mystery and madness, opens.

Now that Iron Man and Captain America have left after a fierce battle in Avengers: Endgame, former genius surgeon and the strongest magician of them all, Doctor Strange, is expected to play an active role as a central figure in the Avengers. However, using his magic to manipulate time and space at will with a forbidden spell that is considered the most dangerous has opened the door to a mysterious madness called "the Multiverse." To restore a world where everything is changing, Strange seeks help from his ally Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, and the Avengers' most powerful Scarlet Witch, Wanda. But a terrible threat looms over humanity and the entire universe that no longer can be done by their power alone. Even more surprising, the greatest threat in the universe looks exactly like Doctor Strange …

Director Sam Raimi, who has expressed a unique worldview, will captivate the whole world with overwhelming scale and unprecedented visual experience that will transcend time and space!

The idea that Doctor Strange is the new Captain America or Iron Man is one actor Benedict Cumberbatch said he wasn't sure about, but the synopsis makes it clear that he's certainly a high-ranking Avenger now that they're gone. Of course, No Way Home revealed that Wong is actually the Sorcerer Supreme, while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings saw him calling shots alongside Bruce Banner and Captain Marvel.

What the synopsis does confirm, however, is that the evil-looking Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer will be the primary threat in the film. It's not clear if it's the same characters as Strange Supreme from What If...?, but the concept seems to be a similar one. Strange will have to face at least one version of himself from the multiverse, and that won't be all he's up against.

The Doctor Strange 2 toy line features another Marvel villain, while the trailer sees the Avengers face off against a tentacled being that could be Shuma-Gorath from the comics. And of course, Baron Mordo will return looking to stop Stephen from constantly meddling with the universe -- and multiverse -- with his magic.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters May 6, 2022.
