Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness production and development manager Richie Palmer opened up about America Chavez's multiversal powers in the upcoming film.

"America is someone we've been trying to get into the MCU for a long time," Palmer told Disney twenty-three magazine. "This felt like the best place to do it, because 'Multiverse' is in the title and her powers specifically have to do with the Multiverse - her powers being that she can punch open doorways to other universes. That's something we haven't seen in our movies, a character who can actually walk from one universe to another. That's maddening in itself for characters such as Doctor Strange and Wong, whose jobs are to protect those barriers."

Of course, Strange himself may be in trouble for all of his meddling with both time and the multiverse across the MCU, making the idea of any anger at America hypocritical. Still, it is his and Wong's duty to protect reality, meaning America may initially be more foe than friend. "If a threat like that comes into our reality from another, those guys are going to fight it," Palmer continued.

In the comics, America can kick and punch star-shaped holes into the multiverse, allowing her to traverse it in ways few others can. That makes the young hero rather powerful, which is why Doctor Strange -- and his enemies -- might be on her trail in the new film.

"He naturally wants to know more about her," America actor Xochitl Gomez added, likely referring to Doctor Strange. "With America, she just keeps going, especially when things are going wrong - and everything is going completely wrong for her. She's running away from her uniqueness until she learns to embrace it. She just never loses hope, and I can relate to that. She's aspirational that way."

America is the latest member of the Young Avengers team to show up in the MCU, further teasing a future franchise with the teen heroes. Fans have already met a young version of Loki; Wanda's kids, Billy/Wiccan and Tommy/Speed; Kate Bishop; Cassie Lang; and Isaiah Bradley's grandson, Eli, who becomes Patriot in the comics.

Xochitl Gomez will make her debut as America Chavez when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters May 6.
