Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom co-creator and artist Bob Fujitani died this past weekend. He was 98 years old.

Fujitani worked on comics from 1940 until he retired in his 80s. He started out as an assistant to Will Eisner, working as a ghost artist for comics like Rip Kirby and Flash Gordon. He also worked for Marvel, MLJ comics, Quality Comics, Holyoke, Lev Gleason. Notably, he never drew anything for DC Comics.

Fujitani is best known for his work on Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom, which debuted in 1962 from Gold Key Comics. The series follows the adventures of Solar, a superhero with the ability to manipulate energy, fly and teleport. The hero was Gold Key Comics' first original character.

Fujitani worked with writer Paul S. Newman until issue #5, when Frank Bolle took over art duties. Newman continued to write until issue #10 — with the exception of #7 — when Dick Wood took over writing the series.

Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom was canceled in 1965, restarted in 1981 and canceled again after four additional issues. It found a second life at Valiant Comics in 1991 before being canceled there as well. After runs with Acclaim Comics and Dark Horse Comics, it finally landed at Dynamite Entertainment in 2013.
