With Thanos now defeated and gone for good in the MCU, fans have been looking to the future to see what or who would become the MCU’s next great foe or threat to face. One of the many fan theories and possibilities for such a foe has to be Doctor Doom.

Otherwise known as Victor Von Doom, the man who would become Reed Richards’ rival and the Fantastic Four’s greatest foe has a rich history behind his name and character. His path to villainy isn’t as clear cut as many fans believe, so let’s look at ten things fans often forget about Doctor Doom.

10 He Was Born Into A World Of Magic

While the world of the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom is ruled mainly by the use of science and technology, Victor’s origin is rooted primarily in magic. Born the son of Cynthia Von Doom, a witch amongst the Latverian Romani people under the rule of a corrupt Baron, Cynthia was taken by Mephisto when Victor was a child.

Victor’s father was the village leader and a medicine man, who tried to heal the Baron’s sick wife and failed. Marked for death by the Baron for his failure, he and Victor fled. His father passed away, and Victor swore his revenge.

9 Ben Grimm Created Doctor Doom

One of the big things that defines Doctor Doom has to be when Victor had his face scarred. After his exploits in Latveria caught the attention of Empire State University, he was offered a chance to learn in the United States, where he began to merge magic with technology.

Creating a device to communicate with his dead mother, Reed warned Victor his machine was off a bit, but Victor ignored him, and the machine’s failure scarred his face. However, it was later revealed Ben Grimm, Reed’s best friend, tampered with the device as he hated Victor’s arrogance, not knowing the consequences of his actions until later.

8 He Became Ruler Of Latveria Through A Revolution

Many casual fans may not know this, but Victor Von Doom wasn’t born into the royalty of Latveria. The land was ruled by an evil Baron, the same one who marked his father for death years earlier. Having sworn revenge for the Baron’s actions as a young man, Victor knew he had to protect the people of Roma.

Leading the people of Latveria in a revolution, Victor took down the Baron and appointed himself the leader of the nation. He would go on to construct himself a suit of armor and an iron mask to conceal his face, becoming Doctor Doom.

7 He Traveled To Camelot

Doom would go on to have many battles with the Fantastic Four over the years, as well as heroes like Spider-Man and the Avengers. One such conflict came up between Iron Man and Doom when Tony Stark discovered Doom was traveling back to the days of King Arthur and the kingdom of Camelot.

Doom went to secure a pact and agreement with the sorceress Morgan le Fay, hoping to use the army of undead warriors slain by King Arthur’s sword Excalibur to create a force to be reckoned with and take over Camelot. Tony stopped Victor, who swore revenge on Iron Man for stranding him in the past.

6 He Constantly Tried Stealing Cosmic Powers

While recent years have shown that Doctor Doom has the ability to steal the power of cosmic entities, like when he became God Emperor Doom in the Secret Wars event, it turns out Doom has a long history of trying to take the power of cosmic beings. He once stole the powers of the Silver Surfer but was stopped by Galactus.

He also stole the power of the being Terrax, but the power was too much for his body and was destroyed. He was later saved by The Beyonder to fight for him during Battleworld but ended up stealing his power as well before losing it.

5 He Helped Earth’s Heroes Fight Onslaught

One of the most surprising turns of Doom’s career came when he agreed to help the Fantastic Four, X-Men and Avengers fight the all-powerful foe Onslaught, who had captured Reed and Sue’s son Franklin. The fight was brutal and powerful, as despite the Hulk’s rage-filled attack cracking apart Onslaught’s armor, the villain remained intact as a psionic entity.

Dragging most of Earth’s heroes into itself, Doom joined the heroes in a sacrifice to stop the villains. After Onslaught was finally defeated, most of the heroes were thought lost, including Doom. However, they survived in a pocket dimension created by Franklin Richards.

4 He Saved Valeria Richards

Later on, Victor was contacted by Johnny Storm, after Sue Storm began to experience complications from her second pregnancy with Reed. Taking the opportunity to prove his superiority to Reed, he not only saved the daughter of Reed and Sue but also cured Johnny of his malfunctioning powers as well.

His only request for the rescue was that he name the child, and in doing so named her after his first love, Valeria. However, this leads to Victor naming Valeria his familiar, and going on a journey to make a pact with a trio of demons for ultimate magical power.

3 He Was Sent To Hell

Gaining powerful new magical abilities, Victor made his move and attacked the Fantastic Four. Sending Franklin Richards to hell to neutralize his powers, he captured Doctor Strange and began torturing the Fantastic Four, leaving Reed to watch this unfold while trapped inside of Doom’s magical library, knowing Reed’s scientific mind could not learn the power needed to stop him.

However, Reed managed to free Doctor Strange, who taught him enough to free his family and friends from Doom’s capture. He then tricked Doom into angering the trio of demons who gave him his new power, causing them to drag him into hell.

2 He Fought The Red Skull

After a time of change for Doctor Doom, who went back and forth between villainy and heroism, he found himself one of the many villains who were caught up in the fight between the Avengers and Red Skull. Red Skull, having taken Professor Xavier’s mind, becomes Red Onslaught.

When the battle switches the heroes into villains and the villains into heroes, Doctor Doom takes Scarlet Witch’s powers and uses them to resurrect the hero Cassie Lang, whom he had slain before this event. He also resurrected Brother Voodoo and helped stop Red Skull before reverting back to normal and being taken into custody.

1 He Created Tony Stark’s Legacy

The most shocking turn of events for Doctor Doom had to be when he took on Tony Stark’s mantle of Iron Man. After suffering injuries that left him in a coma of sorts after the events of Civil War II, Doom decided to honor Stark’s legacy and become the third Iron Man.

After fighting as Iron Man and even defeating Mephisto disguised as The Maker, he joined the Avengers and even fathered a child with Dr. Amara Perera. However, his heroics got the attention of several villains, including the Hood, who fought to take down the now heroic Doctor Doom.
