The format of What If...? has always allowed creators to craft new variations and variants of the Marvel Universe, sometimes even imagining potential new generations of heroes and villains that spring out of the current crop. While they may only appear in a single issue of comics, some of these concepts are enticing enough that they deserve recognition -- and potentially even a resurgence.

Jay Ferber and Gregg Schigiel's What If...? #114 introduced an entirely new generation of potential offspring from the modern Marvel heroes -- including the sons of Thor and Doctor Doom, connected by their shared mother and surprising brotherly bond.

Doctor Doom Thor Brothers What If 1

Earth-9811 was similar to the core-Marvel Universe of Earth-616. However, things changed during the events of Secret Wars. Trapped on Battle-World at the behest of the Beyonder, some of Earth's greatest heroes and villains waged war with each other. However, in this reality, a battle between Galactus and the Beyonder resulted in the death of both (as well as a number of the assembled heroes and villains). The survivors, with no way home, made peace with this and forged relatively happy lives for themselves. Some found romance with others in their community, resulting in some unlikely children such as Kendall (daughter of Wolverine and Storm), CJ (son of She-Hulk and Hawkeye), Sarah (daughter of Captain America and Carol Danvers in Rogue's body), and Matthew (son of Human Torch and Wasp).

The most surprising connection ended up being between the half-brother's Balder and Vincent -- aka Bravado and Malefactor, respectively. The sons of the Enchantress each had a different father. Balder was the son of Thor and was raised alongside the rest of the hero community to become a popular and serious young man, capable of feats of strength and minor magics. Vincent, meanwhile, was the son of Doctor Doom -- raised in relative isolation compared to the others, Vincent proved to be just as mystically and technologically inclined as Doctor Doom. Tutored on the history of Earth by Ultron, Vincent even proved to be as vindictive and sneaky as his father -- turning against him and seemingly killing him ahead of a plan to conquer Battle-World.

Doctor Doom Thor Brothers What If 2

After recruiting the children of Absorbing Man, Molecule Man, the Lizard and the Wrecker to become his new Masters of Evil, Vincent made a plea to his half-brother to join his side -- even hinting Thor was behind the mysterious disappearance of the Enchantress. But Balder reveals that it was only when Enchantress returned to Doctor Doom that she disappear entirely from Battle-World. The young heroes won their battle against the new Masters of Evil, with Balder eventually coming to terms with not being worthy to lift Mjolnir as his father had and instead accepted that it was Sarah who could do so. Doctor Doom also revealed he'd survived the attempt on his life, and disappeared (with Vincent in tow) at the conclusion of the fight.

This reality from the final issue of What If?'s second volume hasn't been revisited since it was introduced. But the potential for a Balder/Vincent bond is one of the most engaging concepts around. The story ends with the young heroes returning to a Sentinel overrun Earth, promising to save it. There's plenty of places for Bravado to grow as a hero in such an environment, and plenty of intrigue for Malefactor's machinations to take hold. If they're ever revisited, they could even potentially give a fresh take on the kind of love/hate brotherly bond that Thor and Loki have possessed in various incarnations across the multiverse. It's notable that it's Vincent who wishes they could be closer, as opposed to Loki (who condemned his beloved brother), and is one of the best ideas for a world asking for a revisit.
