WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #14 by Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have just overcome an attack on the Throneworld by cosmic demigods only to find themselves at the mercy of a single man who might be an even greater threat: Doctor Doom. The metal-faced tyrant hasn't just come to beat up on the heroes, though, but to wrest control of the Kree/Skrull Alliance itself from the hands of Emperor Hulkling. When brute force proves futile, Doom employs one of his oldest and strangest abilities to swap bodies with that of the young Emperor. Unfortunately, the Guardians of the Galaxy are just as quick thinking as Doom himself, and the ruler of Latveria soon enough finds himself trapped in the diminutive form of none other than the Guardians' very own Rocket Raccoon.

Doom's attack on the Guardians and Emperor following their victory over the Progenitors is only a means to an end, specifically getting his hands on the Star Sword Excelsior. As the mystic blade is only fit for the hands of the Emperor himself, though, Hulkling is easily able to recall it to his own grasp with no real effort. Though the Star Sword itself recognizes its true owner, Doom is prepared for that eventuality, and with little more than a glance, he is able to transplant his consciousness into the body of Emperor Hulkling.

The classic body swap tactic is enough to gain Doom the upper hand, but as has happened so often in the past, his pride gets in the way of any victory he might have otherwise achieved. When called out on his cowardice and lack of personal strength, Doom begins the process of returning to his own body, only for Moondragon to intervene in the most hilarious way possible. Her interruption of the body-swapping process leaves Doom's body in the hands of yet another Guardian of the Galaxy, while Doom himself can only look up at the figures now towering over him as he is trapped in the body of the Guardian's own Rocket Raccoon.

As easy as it was for Moondragon to telepathically redirect Doom's momentum, it is equally impossible for the self-proclaimed heir to all kingdoms to suffer the embarrassment and indignity of being stuffed into the body of a rodent. Rocket, on the other hand, seems more than happy to be in the driver's seat of Doom's body, and it doesn't look like the Guardians have any intention of letting Doom back into his own body anytime soon. Moondragon even taunts "The Great And Terrible Victor Von Doom" as still being capable of destroying all of them, even if he would "look just adorable doing it." After once again taking control of his own body, Doom laments his predicament as a learning experience before reemphasizing the seriousness of the impending threat he had previously tried to warn the heroes of. No matter how villainous Doom is at heart, he is still smart enough to know that anything which threatens the universe as a whole is also a threat to any potential reign of his own. Thankfully, he is in just the right place to once again play the hero, even if the arrangement isn't what he originally had in mind.

Peter Quill knows well enough that the Guardians don't stand a chance of imprisoning Doom for long, even if he made a direct attack on the throne. The prospect of escaping from Imperial confinement would only be another thing to boast about. There is one thing that Doom prides himself in above all else, and that is his word, which Star-Lord has devised the perfect way of using against him. If Doom wants to save the universe, he is going to do just that, but it will be as a Guardian of the Galaxy himself. And, to top things off, it looks like he will be doing so from the furry frame he currently inhabits. Though this is far from the worst defeat that Doom has ever suffered, it is easily one of the least dignified. For someone as self-aggrandizing as Doctor Doom, not even saving the universe could heal that wound, which might just be the thing that people remember about this event for years to come.
