WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Doctor Doom #7, by Christopher Cantwell, Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX and Cory Petit, on sale now.

As the monarch of the nation of Latveria, Doctor Doom commands the resources of an entire nation whose people serve him with unquestioning loyalty. On top of that, Victor Von Doom is one of the world's most powerful sorcerers and counted among its greatest scientific minds. There is almost nothing Doctor Doom cannot do when he sets his will to it, and he just showed that knowing how to make an entrance is one of his many skills, too.

In Doctor Doom #7, Doom returns home to Latveria through a snowstorm on the back of a massive bear. As he greets a group of loyal advisors from his government's inner circle, they stare in wonder at the striking site of Doctor Doom sitting astride a roaring brown bear. However, some fans have noticed the similarities between this scene and a popular internet meme: "the cocaine bear."

The meme in question depicts a roaring brown bear trudging through a snowbank with the caption "I f-cking love cocaine." No one knows the exact date the meme was created, but it first appeared on the website Memegenerator as part of a series called "more bear" before spreading widely across the Internet in the early 2010s.

The visual similarities between powdery snow and the narcotic stimulant perfectly pair with the bear's snarling crazed appearance. There are numerous variations on the original meme, including a number featuring other animals or public figures like Charlie Sheen.

Bear Meme

Apparently, Latveria was overdue for its own version of the infamous meme, complete with snow covering his furry hide.

Doctor Doom's new pet is called Novak, a Slavic name that can mean "new," "newcomer," or "stranger." While the specific Slavonic linguistics of the fictional nation Latveria are impossible to pin down, Doom calls Novak his "comrade," a term evoking Soviet ideals of equality. Considering that Doom sees most people as beneath him, this suggests he respects the bear more than his inner circle of loyal government officials.

Novak's name might also foreshadow changes to the old established order in Latveria. After Doom learns one of his generals, Vasily Makeyev, betrayed him, he shoots Makayev and has the man's corpse fed to Novak. The bear devours the corpse down to the bone in a powerful bit of symbolism where he literally eats away at old corruption that cost Doom his throne and sent him into exile in the first place.

Although Novak may be a one-off visual gag who never appears again, the bear shows that Doomknows how to make a symbolic entrance that's worth becoming a meme itself.
