Doc Harris, most famous among anime fans for his work on Dragon Ball Z as the narrator for the series' first English dub, has passed away at age 76.
Via Broadcast Dialogue, popular voice actor and radio personality Doc Harris passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, following a reported minor surgery last month. Harris was known to many as a popular Canadian broadcaster, while older anime fans will know him as the narrator of Ocean Productions' English dubbed version of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, including multiple of its movies.
Harris was known for his silky and deep voice, able to pull in viewers with his deft intonation. His credits include Barbie and the Rockers: Out of This World, Camp Candy, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and Dragon Ball Z, all of which he shared alongside his longtime friend and colleague, Ian James Corlett.
Corlett, who voiced Goku in Ocean's dub, released a touching tribute yesterday on Instagram, describing Harris as "living and breathing music" and having a "keen eye for movies," as well as crediting him as a huge force in his career. "He was one of a kind. This summer, when we were back in vancouver, I must’ve said 'I MUST see Doc on this trip, I owe him so much … well, at least a lunch!' 😈 And now it’s too late. Sorry Doc. I owe you one. Actually I owe you a hundred lunches. RIP DOC 💔🤘🏽," he said in the first of two posts, later adding, "Doc was so gracious of spirit to help out a young gun like me. A guy with essentially little to no experience." He ended, "RIP DOC. You’re #1 in my heart."
Rest in peace, Doc Harris.
