Dungeons & Dragons players have some thoughts on one of Wizards of the Coast's most recent book drops.

A Reddit thread in the r/DnD subreddit brought up many of Mordenkainen's Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse's perceived flaws, but none so prevalent as the racial backgrounds and lore; Specifically, the lack of it. Started by u/Big_Chair1, they opened up the discussion by saying that it was a detriment to the end product and players to remove content that already existed in previously released books such as The Player's Handbook and Volo's Guide to Monsters. Both tomes have detailed information on playable races that touch on the culture, values and history.

MotM was intentionally designed and marketed as an agnostic supplement for dungeon masters to be able to use in any setting and not just in Fifth Edition's primary setting, The Forgotten Realms. However, despite having over 250 monsters and a collection of 30 playable races, users in the Reddit thread maintained that less isn't always more. One commenter, u/Scarehawkx25, summed up the plight of Dungeon Masters with, "Imagine you get writer's block and don't know what to do about the lore behind races or something else. It's always better to have it and don't use it than need it and don't have it."

The criticisms break down into several sub-arguments including how new 5E settings have been handled by the tabletop game publisher. The most recent example is the sourcebook Spelljammer: Adventures in Space. One user contrasted the newly released content with the lore of the original Spelljammer for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and found it to be bare in comparison.

Based on the general reception to WoTC's recent products, concern about the publisher's success with the upcoming Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen was also mentioned. Also originally made for AD&D, the adventure book takes players to the world of Krynn. Players can draw from unique character backgrounds that mirror those of legendary Dragonlance characters such as the mage Raistlin Majere. It is set for release on Dec. 6.

However people may feel about the world's most renowned tabletop roleplaying game's latest adventures and sourcebooks, the game continues to grow. Bolstered by popular online campaigns such as Critical Role and The Adventure Zone, WoTC's RPG has never been more popular. The company will soon introduce an evolved version of the game, titled One DnD, which will fully integrate the DnD Beyond platform into the game rules and update several rules.
