Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves got off to an impressive start in Thursday previews, although its preview numbers fell short of last week's John Wick: Chapter 4.

Per Deadline, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves grossed $5.6 million in previews this week. This includes $4.1 million from Thursday evening screenings and the rest comes from showings held earlier in the week. This falls short of the $8.9 million earned from Thursday previews by John Wick: Chapter 4, which turned that start into a $73.8 million opening weekend, but it's pretty much in line with a couple of other high-profile releases this month.

How the D&D Movie's Opening Compares to Recent Films

The number is slightly ahead of the $5.45 million earned by Creed III in Thursday previews. The third installment of the popular franchise turned those numbers into a franchise-best opening weekend of $58.7 million. D&D's preview grosses also come in slightly below that of Scream VI, which earned $5.7 million on preview night on its way to the best opening of the long-running franchise with $44.5 million by the end of the weekend.

It will be a tight race at the box office for D&D and John Wick 4 should the film debut within its tracking. The second weekend of John Wick: Chapter 4 is expected to pull in about $30 million after its impressive debut last week, which would be around the low end of D&D's tracking. Should the new release exceed that, we could have another number-one film at the box office to kick off the new month.

D&D: Honor Among Thieves' Projected Box Office

Honor Among Thieves is tracking to gross $30-40 million this weekend and some key factors could help the $150 million production surprise during its opening. The film has struck a positive chord with critics, earning an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score is even more impressive at 92%. CBR's Brandon Zachary reviewed the D&D movie, calling it fun, and said the story was "told with charm and enthusiasm."

Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is based on the popular tabletop role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. In the film, a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers embark on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic. However, things go awry when they run afoul of some nefarious characters. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is currently playing in theaters nationwide.
