Justice Smith revealed a special aspect he brought to his character's spellcasting in the upcoming movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

During a panel at Brazil's CCXP, the actor discussed playing a sorcerer in the upcoming film and the work that went into making the magic feel authentic and real. "I do a lot of spellcasting in the film, and I worked with this lovely choreographer to create unique gestures for each spell. And I know a bit of sign language, so I try to incorporate that [into] it," Smith explained. "Whatever the spell does, I try to incorporate the word in sign language into the gesture of this spell. Not for every gesture."

He continued, "I hate [in] movies, when they have magic powers, and they just go like this [gestures vaguely with hand]. I was like, 'I want everything to be unique and creative.' So, remembering which spoken word of the spell goes with which gesture, and at what time. I guess it wasn't difficult. That was just fun."

Honor Among Thieves Brings the D&D Table to the Screen

Based on the iconic tabletop role-playing game of the same name and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will follow a group of thieves who are attempting to make amends for unwittingly unleashing "the most powerful evil the world has ever known." Alongside Smith as Simon the Sorcerer, the film stars Chris Pine as Edgin the Bard, Michelle Rodriguez as Holga the Barbarian, Regé-Jean Page as Xenk the Paladin and Hugh Grant as Forge Fitzwilliam the Rogue.

Dungeons & Dragons content is on the way beyond the new movie. Notably, the second season of The Legend of Vox Machina will make its debut on Prime Video on Jan. 20, 2023. Based on the wildly popular web series Critical Role, where a group of nerdy voice actors get together and play Dungeons & Dragons, the show will see the titular heroes face off against the Chroma Conclave, a deadly and destructive group of dragons.

Moreover, DRSpublishing recently launched a Kickstarter for its new food-themed campaign setting, Silverplate. To give Dungeons & Dragons players a glimpse of what is in store, the company posted the stats and details for one of the new monsters: the Chocolate Fountain. With an attack that involves flinging about hot chocolate and a challenge rating of six, the creature is a deliciously dangerous opponent.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premieres on March 31.
