Wizards of the Coasts announced Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, a new reference book for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition.

The latest expansion to Dungeons & Dragons focuses on the titular beasts, providing players with more information on the game's powerful dragons and introducing a variety of new elements and mechanics. Fizban's Treasury of Dragons should allow players to "Discover how dragons embody magic across the worlds of D&D and how you can bring them to life at your table," according to Wizards of the Coast.

"Dragonslayers and dragon scholars alike will appreciate the new dragon-themed options for players eager to harness the power of dragon magic and create unique and memorable draconic characters," reads the official description of Fizban's Treasury of Dragons. "Discover a host of new dragons and other creatures. Learn about the lairs and hoards of each type of dragon, and how hoards focus the magic that suffuses dragons and connects them to the myriad worlds of the Material Plane."

"We tried to take a 'show, don't tell' approach to talking about Dragons," says James Wyatt, game designer at Wizards of the Coast. "So rather than talking to you for a while about the personalities of Brass Dragons [for example], we give you a table of personality traits you can randomly roll on or choose from."

As explained by Fizban the Fabulous, a "doddering" archmage and divine avatar of a dragon-god, the latest reference book for Dungeons & Dragons will introduce gem dragons to fifth edition and reveal the story of the First World, alongside the role Bahamut and Tiamat played in its birth and death. It includes a complete dragon bestiary, introduces new dragon-related creatures and expands on the creature's mythology, exploring aspects of the dragon gods, minions and more.

Fizban's Treasury of Dragons will also reintroduce a host of Great Wyrms to Dungeons & Dragons. These creatures will make use of the "Mythic Monster Technology" that debuted in Mythic Oddities of Theros. Wyatt states that these beasts were designed to be "exceptionally challenging" encounters, with challenge ratings above 20.

Mechanically, players will be given access to new character options, including draconic ancestries for Dragonborn characters, dragon-themed subclasses for monks and rangers, and a new feat and spell options. It also includes new dragon lair maps and information on 20 different types of dragons in the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse.

Dungeon Masters who wish to torment their players with a variety of new, powerful dragons ought to keep their eyes open for Fizban's Treasury of Dragons when it launches on Oct. 19, 2021. Two versions of the reference book will be available, a standard version and a limited-edition version that sports unique art.
