DMZ is based on the DC/Vertigo Comics series by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli that focuses on a demilitarized Manhattan following a second American Civil War. The adaptation hails from executive producers Ava DuVernay, Paul Garnes and Roberto Patino, the latter of whom is the series creator.

"DMZ is a special project to me as it marks a key collaboration with my company ARRAY Filmworks, the excellent team at Warner Bros TV and the dynamo Roberto Patino," DuVernay said when DMZ's pilot was announced. "We’ve all worked diligently on this material and I’ve witnessed Roberto in action... He’s insanely talented and cares about telling stories with maximum impact and imagination. I’m eager to share this one with DC fans."

"I couldn't be more thrilled to bring this epic to the screen with my boundary-pushing partners at WBTV and HBO Max, a sublime cast led by Rosario and Benjamin, and my partner and friend, the inimitable and ever-inspiring Ava DuVernay," Patino added when HBO Max ordered DMZ to series. "DMZ offers up an explosive playground which, more than anything else, exalts the resilience of community and the human spirit. I can’t wait to welcome the die-hard fans of the comic books and new viewers alike to this intoxicating, haunting and inspiring world."
