The following contains major spoilers for Gargoyles #1, available now from Dynamite Entertainment.

One of the biggest breakout hits of the 90s is back with an all-new series. While Gargoyles #1 (by original creator Greg Weisman, George Kambadais, and Jeff Eckleberry) has kicked the action off in a major way by bringing some of the franchise's biggest villains back into the spotlight, it has also reintroduced its eponymous heroes without missing a beat.

Of course, for a series that hasn't been seen in nearly a decade, there are plenty of fans both new and old who might need a refresher on just who these Defenders of the Night really are. In that case, there is nowhere better to start than with their stoic and occasionally stone-faced leader.

Goliath Leads The Wyvern Clan

gargoyles 1 goliath

Over one thousand years ago, Goliath was the leader of the Wyvern Clan. Together, Goliath and his fellow gargoyles protected their Scottish keep despite the inherent prejudices of the humans who so often saw nothing more than a monster in him. Tricked into taking part in a devastating plot, Goliath allowed himself to be put to sleep in his stone form alongside his fellow Gargoyles until their entire castle was moved atop a Manhattan skyscraper by ruthless billionaire David Xanatos. By bringing the castle above the clouds themselves, the spell was broken, and Goliath awoke to a bright new age full of wonder, and terror.

Hudson Acts as The Wyvern Clan Advisor

gargoyles hudson

Hudson was Goliath's predecessor as the leader of the Wyvern Clan and still serves as his mentor to this very day. When Hudson believed that his own inaction was responsible for the near death of their prince, he led the charge to find a cure for the young royal. Though Hudson lost his eye in the process, he never lost his way, even after handing over the leadership of their clan to Goliath. As the oldest of the Manhattan Clan, Hudson has frequently found himself questioning how much longer his kind can last. That said, he is also the most overjoyed of them all at the prospect of another generation flying forward long after he has died off.

Broadway Advocates For Modernity

gargoyles broadway

Of all the original Wyvern Clan Gargoyles, Broadway was the one to find his place in the future with the most ease. Rather than stressing over time lost or knowledge waiting to be learned, Broadway developed an immediate fondness for modern conveniences and entertainment. He was also the first of his kind to try and embrace humanity at every level. This included making friends with those who would fear him and imitating the detectives he sees on television. Broadway has always made a concerted effort to meet others on their terms no matter how different they might be.

Bronx is The Wyvern Clan's Trusted Hound

gargoyles bronx

Though the Gargoyle beast known as Bronx appears to be and admittedly is the most animalistic member of the Wyvern/Manhattan Clan, that hasn't kept him from being a veritable force of nature in his own right. When his fellow ancient Gargoyles were being shattered in their stone slumbers, Bronx was quick to come to their aid, and he has stayed by the survivors' sides ever since. Bronx has also become one of the most endearing members of his clan even without a voice of his own. He is a loyal hound just like any otherwise ordinary family would proud to have.

Lexington is The Wyvern Clan's Tech Specialist

gargoyles lexington

Lexington is the most diminutive of the original Wyvern Clan, yet he more than makes up for his size in numerous ways. Much like Broadway, Lexington fell in love with the modern world, though more for its technical marvels than anything else. As the Clan's resident expert on all things modern, Lexington has been invaluable in missions that require a bit more tech-savvy than his counterparts can offer.

Brooklyn is a Hardened Time-Traveler

gargoyles 1 brooklyn

The last of the Wyvern Clan still sporting his original form, Brooklyn has seen just as much as his fellow Gargoyles and more thanks to having been ripped through time for an adventure all his own. During his journey, Brooklyn ventured to his ancestral homeland, fought against interstellar threats, and even found love in feudal Japan. For the rest of the team, Brooklyn was gone for mere seconds, whereas the four decades it was to him has changed all their lives in ways they never could have imagined.

Katana

gargoyles 1 katana

Katana met Brooklyn during his trip to feudal Japan. Though not much is known about her, she has proven herself to be a powerful fighter and put her life on the line to protect Manhattan from the Gargoyles' enemies almost as soon as she arrived in their current present. Katana has also become a part of the family quite literally after giving birth to and raising her and Brooklyn's son, Nashville. Of course, the young gargoyle is already well on his way toward establishing a legacy all his own.

Nashville

gargoyles nashville

Like his parents, Nashville, aka Gnash, was part of the battle against the villains Wolf, Hyena, and Jackal during their attack on Times Square despite having just stepped into the future for himself. As a result of being born during his parents' trek through time, Gnash has developed an eclectic personality, to say the least. He also has a profoundly open outlook on the rest of the world. He may be the youngest of the Manhattan Clan, yet he is quickly proving to be just as capable as any other Gargoyle. The road ahead of him holds countless possibilities for who he will ultimately grow up to be.

Angela is Goliath's Long Lost Daughter

gargoyles 1 angela

Angela was raised among the Avalon Clan of gargoyles, far from the eyes of her father, Goliath. In fact, those who brought her up in the world were dedicated to keeping her safe from the threats of the outside world, although that was only possible for so long. Eventually, Angela discovered who both her father and mother, the villainous Demona, truly were. She would then embark upon deeply personal missions to connect with them. Ultimately, Angela found her place away from her mother's dark influence with the rest of the Manhattan Clan, not to mention romance with none other than their very own Broadway.

Coldfire & Coldstone Are Cyborg Gargoyles Out of Time

gargoyles 1 coldstone coldfire

Known as Desdemona and Othello respectively in their former lives, the cybernetic Gargoyles now known as Coldfire and Coldstone were a pair of Wyvern Clan members whose classical romance ended in abject tragedy. Both they and Desdemona's brother Iago were shattered by Viking raiders when the Gargoyles first fell, though that wasn't nearly the end of their story. Over a thousand years later, their remains would be used to bring Desdemona and Iago back to life as Coldfire and Coldsteel, while what was left of Othello became the cybernetic Coldstone. Unfortunately, Coldsteel has been unable to escape his treacherous ways, whereas Coldfire and Coldstone have become unexpected members of their original clan.

Detective Elisa Maza is The Gargoyle's Human Companion

gargoyles elisa

The lone human member of the Manhattan Clan, Detective Elisa Maza first encountered the Gargoyles while investigating a series of disturbances all centered in or around Xanatos' castle-capped skyscraper. This led her to discover Goliath and the rest of the Manhattan Clan, and while she was initially frightened by their existence, she quickly came to terms with their place in the world. Elisa has been the Clan's greatest source of both resources and information. This coupled with her own heroics and the romance she and Goliath have cultivated has made Elisa into an indelible part of the Manhattan Clan, if not its beating heart.
