FX on Hulu's Y: The Last Man may be revived by Disney after being canceled in its first season.

According to a report from Streamr, Disney is considering developing more episodes of Y: The Last Man and rebranding it as a Hulu or Disney+ Original. This is said to be part of Disney's plan to reassess its content production with the aim of serving a wider audience. Although the company tends to release its original shows on a weekly basis, Streamr also suggests that Disney may choose to release a new season all at once, a model made popular by Netflix.

Y: The Last Man's cancellation had nothing to do with its viewership figures, but instead was a result of the cast's contracts expiring. Some cast members, such as Diane Lane and Amber Tamblyn, originally joined the show in 2018, but the departure of the original showrunners in April 2019 delayed production. With the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown holding things up even further, the already-extended options for the show's cast members expired on Oct. 15, and FX chose not to renew.

The news of the cancellation came before FX even finished airing Season 1, and Y: The Last Man showrunner Eliza Clark quickly expressed her desire to continue telling the story. "I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more left to tell," Clark wrote.

In an interview with CBR in November, Clark again expressed her hopes for a Season 2, but couldn't confirm if there had been any progress in securing a new home for the show. "[There's] not anything that I can talk about yet, but I am very hopeful and optimistic," she said. "I feel like this show will go somewhere else, and I'm hopeful about it."

This isn't the first time that future episodes of Y: The Last Man have been linked to a new home. As Y: The Last Man is based on the acclaimed DC/Vertigo comic of the same name, HBO Max has also been suggested. Both HBO Max and DC are owned by the same parent company, WarnerMedia, and HBO Max already airs several shows based on DC properties, with many more in development.

Season 1 of Y: The Last Man is currently streaming on FX on Hulu.
