Peter Jackson revealed in a new interview that Disney asked him to remove all the swearing from his new documentary series, The Beatles: Get Back, but he refused to do so at the request of the band's surviving members.

"Disney wanted to remove all the swearing," Jackson told NME. "And Ringo [Starr], Paul [McCartney] and [George Harrison's widow] Olivia said: 'That's how we spoke. That's how we talked. That's how we want the world to see us.'"

The director added that, upon seeing the film, McCartney described it "as being very raw," noting the musician told him, "That is a very accurate portrayal of how we were then." Meanwhile, Starr called the documentary "truthful." Jackson shared, "The truthfulness of it is important to them. They don't want a whitewash. They don't want it to be sanitized."

Despite asking that the swearing remain, Jackson said McCartney and Starr had no further notes. "When they got to see the finished thing, I was expecting notes," the director recalled. "It would've just been normal to get a note saying: 'Oh, that bit where I say that -- could you cut that out?' Or, 'Could you shorten the conversation there?' And I didn't get a single note. Not one request to do anything."

"One of them said that they watched it and found it one of the most stressful experiences of their entire life," Jackson continued, adding that the Beatle in question said in the same breath, "But I'm not gonna give you any notes."

Disney+ has marketed itself as a family-focused streaming platform since its launch, with more adult content being released on the Disney-owned Hulu and Star hub, the latter of which is available as part of Disney+ in international markets where Hulu isn't accessible. However, the platform has made some exceptions with films and series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and 2020's Hamilton, both of which include a handful of swears.

A Disney+ insider revealed back in October there's been tension behind the scenes at Disney+ about whether or not more adult content should make its way onto the platform. Specifically, the insider said Bob Chapek, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, wants the content to reach a wider audience. In contrast, former CEO and current executive of the board, Bob Iger, wants to keep the platform centered on families.

Directed by Peter Jackson, The Beatles: Get Back is a three-part documentary series covering the making of the Beatles' 1970 album Let It Be. The series is streaming now on Disney+.
