Disney has debuted the fittingly operatic teaser trailer for Maleficent, the live-action prequel/retelling of the studio's animated classic Sleeping Beauty, with Angelina Jolie in the role of the  titular villain.

The directorial debut of Robert Stromberg, the Oscar-winning production designer of Alice in Wonderland, Avatar and Oz the Great and Powerful, the film tells the story of the iconic Disney villain, who grew up in a peaceable forest kingdom until she's forced by an invading army to become her land's fiercest protector. However, she suffers a betrayal that turns her heart to stone and gives her a thirst for revenge that leads Maleficent to curse the newborn daughter of the invading king's successor. But as the child Aurora grows, Maleficent realizes the girl holds the key to piece in the kingdom, as possibly Maleficent's own happiness.

Written by Paul Dini and Linda Wolverton, Maleficent also stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville. It opens May 30.
