Disney to begin construction on ‘Star Wars’ lands next year

Disney will break ground next year on its hotly anticipated Star Wars-themed lands at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

“This will be I think perhaps the most immersive land we’ve ever built,” Walt Disney Co. Chief Operating Officer Tom Staggs told investors on Thursday. “We want people to feel like they’ve stepped into the world of Star Wars, and so that’s really sparked our imaginations and it’s got people fired up.”

Announced last month at the D23 Expo, following days of intense speculation, the initiative is characterized as Disney Parks’ “largest single-theme land expansion ever.” The plan calls for 14-acre Star Wars areas in Anaheim and Orlando, where Staggs reiterated that guests will be able to visit the Mos Eisley cantina and pilot the Millennium Falcon.

Disney CEO Bog Iger emphasized during last month’s announcement that, “Every encounter will bring more of the Star Wars story to life than ever before. Every store and restaurant will be operated by local inhabitants. Nothing in the land will be out of character, or stray from mythology.”

Neither an opening date nor a price tag has been revealed, but the Orlando Sentinel suggests construction will take several years and billions of dollars to complete.
