Disney's Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie won't be a reboot of the franchise, but a continuation of the old television series. The film's leads, John Mulaney and Andy Samberg, appeared in a video as part of the announcements for Disney+ Day. "Now I know what you're thinking," Samberg said. "'Another reboot? No!' But our film isn't a reboot. It's a comeback. But don't take it from me, take it from the marketing people who wrote it down on this adorable little script." He then shared an image of the film's script, which was small enough to fit in the hands of an anthropomorphic chipmunk. "It was shockingly hard to read," Mulaney adds. "But we got through it."RELATED: Spider-Man: Freshman Year Series Announced for Disney+

Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers first premiered in 1989, becoming the third entry in the then-burgeoning Disney Afternoon programming block. The series recast the classic cartoon characters as modern-day private detectives who deal with cases that are "too small" for the police to handle, often helping other anthropomorphic critters. Joining them on their adventures was flighty mechanic Gadget Hackwrench, globe-trotting adventurer Monterey Jack and his housefly companion Zipper. The series ran for 65 episodes across three seasons and is today remembered fondly as a cornerstone of the Disney Afternoon.

A hybrid animated/live-action adaptation of Rescue Rangers was first announced in 2014 with Robert Rugan set to write and direct. At Disney's Investor Day 2020, it was announced that Akiva Schaeffer had taken over as director with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand writing the screenplay. Mulaney and Samberg were announced to play the title roles of Chip and Dale, respectively. Corey Burton will reprise his role as Zipper from the original series, while Seth Rogen will have a cameo. Production began in March of this year.

The day's announcements also included a first look behind the scenes at Hocus Pocus 2, the 1993 Halloween cult classic, as well as Warwick Davis introducing the cast to the sequel series to his 1988 fantasy feature, Willow.

The Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers will premiere in Spring 2022 on Disney+. All three seasons of the show that inspired it are currently available to stream.
