Disney+ has officially ordered a series based on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

"The wait is over, demigods," author Rick Riordan said in an announcement video. "I am thrilled to be the first to tell you that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really, truly, and for sure coming to your screens." Riordan is penning the pilot with Jon Steinberg, with James Bobin directing and all three executive producing. Dan Shotz, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell and D.J. Goldberg also executive produce.

"With Rick Riordan, Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz leading our creative team, we’re deep into creating a compelling TV series worthy of the heroic mythological characters that millions of Percy Jackson readers know are well-worth caring about," Disney Branded TV President Ayo Davis said in a separate statement. "We’re eager to invite Disney+ audiences into stories that are true to the blockbuster franchise and full of anticipation, humor, surprise, and mystery."

Based on the novels written by Riordan, Percy Jackson series was announced in May 2020. "After a lot of hard work and a lot of support from you guys, Percy Jackson is coming to Disney+," Riordan said at the time, though the project had yet to be given the green light.

Updates since have been sporadic, with Riordan explaining in January 2021 that "Everyone who has read the pilot script loves it, but there will be a few additional tweaks we need to make before we send it off to its next stop: the top execs at Disney+. That's normal. In scriptwriting, as in every other kind of writing, you can expect to do many, many drafts!"

Percy Jackson was previously adapted to live-action in the form of two films: 2010's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief and 2013's Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. While neither installment wowed critics, both were considered financial successes.

"Bringing Rick Riordan’s brilliant Percy Jackson books to Disney+ as a television series has been a mission for so many of us at this company as well as for Rick himself, and Jon, Dan, James and the excellent team they have assembled have proven to be the perfect collaborators," 20th Television President Karey Burke said of the forthcoming series. "Thanks to our friends at Disney Branded Television led by Ayo, and Disney Streaming led by Michael, this will be an adaptation for the ages, with all the excitement, action and mythology fans of the books expect and love."
