Reports that Disney+ was developing an Ironheart MCU series first surfaced in May. Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato, Riri Williams first appeared in 2016's Invincible Iron Man #7 as a 15-year old engineering student attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Using her genius-level intellect, Riri assembled her own suit of armor using scavenged pieces of Iron Man's armor. Riri replaced Tony Stark as Iron Man after he went into a coma in Civil War II, and later took up the mantle of Ironheart upon Stark's return.

Ironheart is a member of the Champions, a superhero team comprised of other young heroes from the Marvel Universe. The team functions as a younger version of the Avengers, with the roster consisting of Ms. Marvel (who is also receiving a Disney+ series), Miles Morales Spider-Man, Nova and Vision's daughter, Viv Vision.

The first Marvel Cinematic Universe series to premiere on Disney+ is WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. WandaVision will premiere on Jan. 15, 2021.
