The 18th-century fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" has been good to Disney, serving as the basis as a 1991 animated movie that's grossed nearly $425 million since its original release and spawning spinoffs, merchandise and even a Broadway production. And now the House of Mouse is returning to the well once more.

Deadline reports the studio is in talks with Trance screenwriter Joe Ahearne to reinvent Beauty and the Beast as a live-action, and likely 3D, film called simply The Beast. The website suggests the project might be a darker revisionist take on the tale.

The film will be produced by Mandeville’s David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman and overseen for Disney by LouAnne Brickhouse.
