Disney and Pixar's The Incredibles is a movie that was ahead of its time. It was a fantastic and surprisingly emotional superhero romp before the real superhero craze would begin. It was equal parts Disney, Pixar and comic books, during a time when comic books weren't what they are now. Today however is a much different story. Every other gigantic, summer tent-pole movie is a highly-anticipated superhero film, thanks to the efforts of studios like Marvel and Warner Bros. Not only has the superhero game changed, but the audience has changed along with it.

Now, after 14 years, the sequel to The Incredibles is finally happening. The movie was teased for years and, while it was confirmed a long time ago, no one truly believed it would be among us -- that is, until the sequel's trailer was finally released. While we got an idea of the movie's story, however, much is still shrouded in mystery. Now, our calendars are marked for June 14th, 2018. As we count down the days until the return of Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack, we're getting ready. Here, CBR lists eight things we officially know about The Incredibles 2 and seven curious fan rumors that have been doing the rounds online.

15 KNOW: THE MOVIE PICKS UP RIGHT AFTER THE FIRST

It has long been confirmed that the story of The Incredibles 2 will take place right after the original. The first Incredibles ended with the arrival of new supervillain The Underminer and the entire Parr family suiting up to take the villain on.

Now, we know that the sequel will start exactly where the first left off, with the family fighting The Underminer.

It might have taken more than 14 years, but we will finally see the conclusion to the promising end of the original film. The movie is then poised to start with an epic action scene where superpowers and gigantic machinery will clash. This will allow the sequel to highlight how powerful the entire family is, right from the start -- all while showing us where they shine, and what they need to work on as a unit.

14 RUMOR: THERE WILL BE A TIME JUMP

Since the first Incredibles film was released a long time ago, many assumed that the appropriate time would have separated the sequel and that Incredibles 2 would catch up with the superhero family with the children now all grown up. However, now that we know that the movie will take place right after the events of the first, we can surmise that that won't be the case. Or will it?

Although the sequel starts where the original left off, that hasn't stopped fans from speculating that the movie could feature a time jump of sorts.

While it won't be at the beginning, it could take place in the middle of the film, or during its final act. With so many supepowers involved, it's entirely possible to see future versions of the Parr kids, through time travel or just a good-old fashioned time jump.

13 KNOW: ELASTIGIRL WILL GET THE SPOTLIGHT

Elastigirl sneaks around a dimly-lit hallway in The Incredibles.

Thanks to the official trailer of The Incredibles 2, we saw that Helen Parr, aka Elastigirl, will get the spotlight when it comes to the bulk of the superhero work. The focus on the matriarch of the Parr family comes at a time when many movies, television series and comic book series are focusing on their female superheroes.

There has long been a focus on male superheroes and now it's the time for women to shine -- and Incredibles 2 looks to follow that trend.

However, this isn't to say that Elastigirl wasn't already an important character back in the first film. She already was established as a strong female character, one who put her family first, above anything. For the sequel, it seems she will get the superhero spotlight, where we will see her taking care of villains and criminals, all while keeping her family safe.

12 RUMOR: SYNDROME WILL RETURN

Syndrome from Pixar's The Incredibles

The supervillain Syndrome met his untimely end during the final act of the Incredibles. The villain planned to kidnap toddler Jack-Jack Parr and become his evil mentor. But thanks to the efforts of the rest of the family, Jack-Jack was saved, and Syndrome was defeated. How? By falling victim to his own cape, which sucked him into the turbine engine of his own ship.

The ship exploded and Syndrome was, by all accounts, dead. But the Incredibles universe is one of superheroes, superpowers and advanced technology. Its roots are based in comic book lore and, in comics, death is a very rare thing.

No matter how often a character dies in comics, he or she will always, eventually return.

Because of this very fact, some have theorized that Syndrome will return to torment the Parr family once more.

11 KNOW: MR. INCREDIBLE IS A STAY-AT-HOME DAD

The first Incredibles film saw Bob Parr, aka Mr. Incredible, sneak back into a life of superhero adventure. Trying to reclaim the glories of his past, Bob put on his suit again, but stumbled into an elaborate trap that managed to put his entire family at risk.

This time around, it seems like Bob will take a backseat, as far as stopping super-criminals.

Thanks to the teaser and the official trailer of the sequel, we now know that Bob Parr will opt to stay at home and take care of his children while his wife Helen is out gallivanting as a superhero. After all, Bob is currently the only one who knows of Jack-Jack's developing and highly volatile superpowers, and it will be interesting to see how he handles this side of fatherhood.

10 RUMOR: JACK-JACK IS THE REAL VILLAIN OF THE FILM

Jack-Jack attacks with eyebeams in The Incredibles

As soon as the youngest member of the Parr family, Jack-Jack, started exhibiting superpowers, it was clear that the child was incredibly powerful. In fact, no one is certain what the extent of his abilities are. For now, it seems like there isn't much he can't do, and that instantly makes him a possibly dangerous threat.

The first film teased Syndrome mentoring Jack-Jack into villainy and that could end up being the case in the sequel.

While there are rumors that Syndrome might return in The Incredibles 2, there are other possibilities that could see Jack-Jack turn out to be the film's main villain -- something that could easily come to pass should the film feature some sort of time jump. Whether Syndrome is involved in this turn or not, some truly believe that Jack-Jack will be the main threat this time around.

9 KNOW: FROZONE AND EDNA MODE ARE BACK

The Incredibles Frozone

What's a Disney/Pixar movie without its endearing supporting cast? In the original Incredibles movie, viewers got to know Bob's best friend and partner in crime-fighting, Frozone. Not only that, but we were also introduced to the superhero family's costume designer, Edna Mode.

Both characters instantly became fan-favorites and fans everywhere should be relieved to know that both characters are back for the sequel.

Samuel L. Jackson, who voices Frozone, is back in the movie's voice cast, as is director Brad Bird, who voiced Edna in the first film. We don't yet know what role these two characters will play in the sequel, but don't be surprised to see both of them live up to their immense popularity. With The Incredibles 2, Frozone and Edna may become even more popular than before and that's saying something.

8 RUMOR: MR. AND MRS. INCREDIBLE WILL RETIRE

Both Bob and Helen Parr were forced to retire from their superhero careers back in the opening half of the first Incredibles movie. Although, at that time, it wasn't by their choice. Because of the government, they simply had to. Syndrome forced them to come out of retirement and back into the superhero game. However, the careers of the children, Dash and Violet, are only starting.

This has led to some rumors that, by the end of the film, we could see both Mr. and Mrs. Incredible retire for good this time, of their own volition.

The rumor theorizes that this would open the door for Dash and Violet to become superheroes of their own, to earn their stripes and become the face of the new generation of the Incredibles franchise.

7 KNOW: THE NEW VILLAIN IS A MYSTERY, BUT HE HAS A PLAN

Amid all the things we know and don't know about The Incredibles 2, there is something that falls in-between: the identity of the movie's villain.

While Disney hasn't released that information yet, the synopsis of the movie reveals that there is a new villain in the film, and that he or she has a brilliant plan in motion.

But who is this mysterious villain and why the secrecy? It took a long time for The Incredibles 2 to happen, which goes to show that writer and director Brad Bird took his time in figuring out the right story for his characters. Surely, this mysterious new villain's plan is crucial to the story, and its effects will reverberate on the entire Parr family. The secrecy only makes us believe that the villain's identity will come as a surprise, or a twist.

6 RUMOR: DASH WILL TURN EVIL

The Incredibles – Dash

The simple fact that we don't know much about The Incredibles 2's villain is the source of many rumors. The secrecy at play makes some wonder if that is because it's a character we know. Among those rumors, some fans have theorized that the sequel could turn one of the original movie's characters into one of the villains.

In fact, many believe that Dash, who has constantly been held back by his parents, could turn to the dark side in the film.

A hero turning to the side of evil is a staple of the comic book genre, which means that it would be entirely possible to see a frustrated Dash be manipulated by a mysterious villain to turn on his family. This would surely make the drama of the film incredibly personal, while giving the Parr family something tangibly real to fight against, and for.

5 KNOW: A BREAKING BAD REUNION

Breaking Bad's Mike Ehrmantraut standing in the desert squinting against the sun.

In the first Incredibles film, Rick Dicker was a character that worked as a sort of secret liaison between the government and the Parr family. He was voiced by Bud Luckey, who has worked on many different Disney/Pixar movies. However, Luckey will be replaced in the sequel by actor Jonathan Banks, most famously known for his role as Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad and its spinoff series, Better Call Saul.

What's more, Banks isn't coming alone. In fact, he's bringing his fellow Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul co-star along with him.

Bob Odenkirk, who portrays the morally-ambiguous lawyer Saul Goodman on both AMC series, is joining the voice cast of The Incredibles 2. He will be playing a character named Winston Deavor, a telecommunications expert who wishes to alter the public's perception of superheroes for the better.

4 RUMOR: THE BAN ON SUPERHEROES WILL BE LIFTED

The prologue of The Incredibles showed us a world that was rife with superheroes. However, their heroic efforts often led to the destruction of property, injuries and other sorts of collateral damage. For that reason, the government eventually established a new law that banned superheroes from operating. In exchange, their identities would be kept secret and they would be allowed to live quiet, normal lives. Outside of the family drama glimpsed in the trailer of The Incredibles 2, we don't really know much about the film's main plot.

There is a rumor floating around that the movie could see the superhero ban be lifted by the government.

This would certainly shake things up for the sequel. On top of that, a new character, The Ambassador, is said to appear as a voice of support for the superheroes. This makes us wonder if the world finally recognizes that it needs heroes once again.

3 KNOW: A NEW SUPERHERO WILL BE INTRODUCED

The Parrs are far from being the only super-powered individuals in their world. Of course there is Frozone, but there are also countless others, as we saw in The Incredibles' opening prologue. While rumors seem to hint at the ban on superheroes being lifted, it seems like there will be a new superhero in town that might help fuel those theories.

This new character, who will be voiced by Sophia Bush, is named Voyd, and it is said that she is a super-powered woman who is quite the fan of Elastigirl.

She has to power to create voids, much like Spider-Man villain The Spot, explaining her superhero name. Perhaps Elastigirl's superhero adventures will inspire Voyd to suit-up herself. That way, we might be looking at the newest female superhero team-up, one to rival Mr. Incredible and Frozone.

2 RUMOR: THE MOVIE WILL SET UP A THIRD CHAPTER

You need to be more flexible the incredibles

The first Incredibles movie ended with a cliffhanger. While that is just the nature of superhero storytelling, we already know that the sequel will pick up on that thread established so very long ago. This has led some to speculate that we might be getting a similar treatment with The Incredibles 2.

After all, the franchise is incredibly (pun intended) popular, and we already know that fans will be leaving the theatre ready for part 3.

Surely Disney and Pixar know that the movie is highly-anticipated and that it might turn into a box office hit. With the studios willing to delve intro trilogy territory (see Toy Story, Cars) it stands to reason that The Incredibles could join that exclusive group. After all, there is infinite potential for the Parr's adventures and a sequel would only be logical.

1 KNOW: BRAD BIRD IS BACK IN THE DIRECTOR'S CHAIR

In case you aren't simply excited for the big screen return of The Incredibles or you're uncertain if there is any chance that the sequel will be as good as the original, than you can put those worries aside.

Why? Because the same man who created these characters, Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first film, is once again back in the director's chair.

Brad Bird didn't make a sequel for sequel's sake. In fact, a sequel wasn't always in the cards for him. The director ended The Incredibles the way he did because that's how he wanted his movie to end, not because he was setting up the future. Bird took his time and he has returned with a new story that we know will feel natural and organic, and one that will undoubtedly live up to the expectations of millions of Disney fans.
