Disney is reportedly developing a sequel to Mulan, despite the fact that the first film has not even hit theaters yet.

According to Daniel Richtman, a sequel is in the early stages of development, with producers Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner set to return. No writer, director or cast members are officially attached to the project.

The House of Mouse did release a direct-to-video sequel to its animated classic in 2004, which followed  Mulan and General Li Shang as they escorted the Emperor's three daughters across the country to meet their respective fiancés. However, the live-action Mulan sequel will not use this story, instead opting for an original script that has yet to be written.

Whether or not the sequel goes through, however, will depend on Mulan's domestic and international box office reception. Disney was hoping for big numbers, especially in China, before the film was delayed due to the coronavirus. The film will now premiere on July 24, but that could change depending on how the virus spreads over the next couple of months.

Mulan is not the only live-action Disney film to be considered for a sequel. Disney is currently weighing options for an Aladdin sequel and has already ordered a spinoff centered around Prince Anders. It also has a Jungle Book sequel in the works.

Directed by Niki Caro, Disney's Mulan stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, and Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film arrives in theaters July 24.
