Disney has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming live-action adaptation of Mulan.
The trailer, which Disney released on YouTube, sets up the premise of Mulan's parents wanting to arrange a marriage for her. Although she appears at first to acquiesce, she continues practicing martial arts. The climax of the trailer shows Mulan battling an army and several glimpses of what she'll look like while pretending to be a man.
A plot summary on the video reads:
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.
In addition to the trailer, Disney released a new poster for the film, which you can see below.
Mulan is a live-action movie based on the animated Disney film that premiered in 1998 and is the latest in a stream of remakes from the House of Mouse. Other classic animated films receiving the treatment include The Lion King, Dumbo, Aladdin and Beauty & The Beast.
There have been rumors Mulan won't feature characters singing classic songs or Mushu, and there's nothing in the trailer to debunk those claims. Overall, the film appears to be treating the original movie less faithfully than other live-action Disney remakes.
Mulan, directed by Niki Caro, stars Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Gong Li and Jet Lee. The film is scheduled to open on March 27, 2020.
