With principal photography for Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan two months away, the film has cast the love interest for its warrior princess.
New Zealand actor Yoson An (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny) has joined the cast as new character Chen Honghui, who replaces the original love interest Captain Li Shang, voiced in the 1998 animated classic by B.D. Wong. Li Shang's role as Mulan's mentor/commander and love interest has been split into two new characters, Commander Tung (Donnie Yen) and Chen Honghui, an eager recruit in Tung and Mulan's unit who eventually becomes a love interest for Liu Yifei's title character.
Also included in the casting announcement are Chum Ehelepola and Utkarsh Ambudkar, who play Ramtish and Skatch, described as a pair of con artists who find themselves roped into Mulan's quest to save China.
Preproduction on Mulan is under way in New Zealand and is already slated to become the most expensive live action Disney adaptation with an estimated production budget of $290 million.
Directed by Niki Caro, Disney's Mulan arrives March 27, 2020. Liu Yifei stars in the title role, joined by Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Gong Li, Yoson An, Chum Ehelepola, and Utkarsh Ambudkar.
