Filming has begun on Disney's Maleficent 2, with several new stars joining the returning cast from the 2014 original.
Angelina Jolie returns to the title role, with Elle Fanning reprising her role as Princess Aurora. The studio confirmed today that the newcomers are led by Michelle Pfeiffer (Batman Returns) as Queen Ingrith, along with Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), Robert Lindsay (Wimbledon), and Harris Dickinson (Trust) as Aurora's prospective love interest, Prince Philip.
While details on the new roles are still being kept under wraps, it was previously reported that Skrein will play a villain. Rounding out the cast are returning actors Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.
Fanning commemorated the first day of principal photography with a photo of herself and Jolie on set.
The sequel to 2014's Maleficent sees the titular witch from the live-action revisionist take on Disney's 1952 animated classic Sleeping Beauty navigating her complex relationship with Aurora. Years after the events of the original, the witch helps the young princess prepare to assume the throne while new enemies threaten Maleficent's magical moors populated by all sorts of fantasy creatures.
Directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), Maleficent 2 is expected to open in 2019.
