Disney has confirmed that its upcoming live-action remake of the 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be released in 2024.

The upcoming musical fantasy film stars West Side Story's Rachel Zegler as the titular Disney princess with Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot cast in the role of the Evil Queen. The actors have individually expressed their excitement at starring in a remake of Disney's first animated feature-length film, with Gadot stating, "I get to sing and I get to dance and I get to play the villain, which is something that I've never done before -- and it's the first Disney villain ever."

Snow White was announced in October 2016 with Erin Cressida Wilson writing the screenplay. Marc Webb joined the live-action remake as director in May 2019. The film remained in active development until 2021 when Zegler and Gadot were cast in the lead roles. Production officially commenced in March 2022 and wrapped the following July, with Gadot sharing a photo of herself and her production crew on her Instagram story to celebrate the occasion. "Last day on Snow White with the best team ever!!!! #EVILQUEEN" the actor wrote in the caption.

Rachel Zegler Is a Disney Princess

Despite showcasing her acting chops in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, Zegler admitted that she was still shocked to find out she had won the role of Disney's first princess. "Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me," she explained in Jan. 2022. "You don't normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries. Blanca Nieves is a huge icon whether you're talking about the Disney cartoon or just different iterations and the Grimm fairy tale and all the stories that come with it." She added that she is excited to "get to be a Latina princess."

Despite filming having already wrapped, only three actors have been announced so far to be appearing in Snow White opposite Zegler and Gadot. Andrew Burnap, best known for starring in the 2019 Broadway production of The Inheritance, will play an original character named Jonathan in the film, who is described as a "Robin Hood-like" person and Snow White's love interest. Pirates of the Caribbean star Martin Klebba will portray Grumpy, one of the seven dwarfs, while Dujonna Gift has been cast in an undisclosed role.

Snow White will open in theaters in 2024.
