When it comes to live-action adaptations of its beloved animated classics, Disney shows no sign of changing course. The latest film to be selected for a remake is Atlantis: the Lost Empire.
A live-action version of Atlantis is currently in its early stages of development, according to The Illuminerdi. This will join many of Disney's recent adaptations, including The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Lady and the Tramp. However, Atlantis is an interesting addition, as the original was less successful on its release in 2001 than most other Disney animated projects and remains lesser known than many of Disney's releases.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire, directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise and featuring the voices of Michael J. Fox and Leonard Nimoy, told the story of a team of explorers who set out to discover the remains of the lost city of Atlantis, and instead find that Atlantis has survived and its people have been living for centuries cut off from the rest of the world.
The film was set apart from Disney's other animated movies due to its stylistic animation, original plot, and lack of musical numbers. Many fans appreciate its diverse cast of characters and stylistic animation, and even claim that it's overall of a higher quality than Disney's more popular classics.
A release window and director for the live-action Atlantis has not yet been announced. It is also not known if the film will have a theatrical release or go straight to the Disney+ streaming service.
